Was watching the Spirit of St. Louis movie the other night (Jimmy Stewart version), and got to thinking about the default Ryan. Has anyone mucked with a more user friendly FM or know of one? As you all know it is nearly unflyable, especially with a lot of fuel. Would be nice to have a more enjoyable hand-flyer version to cruise around in.

That would defeat the purpose of this particular aircraft. Lindy had Ryan tweak the aircraft to be unstable, his reasoning being that this would force him to stay awake.
In this case I think the only way to appreciate the accomplishment is to live with the flight model challenge. At least we can hit the pause key and get up from the PC and walk away from it for a while.

Drop 90% of fuel; the real thing flew for 34 hours on full tanks! 10% will still give you three hours of flight time. Much easier that way. ;)
