S2F-1 Color help....

Duckie

SOH-CM-2024
Checking to see if anyone has any information that might confirm or deny that VS-31 Squadron color (yellow) is applied in the areas circled in the attached foto. The cowl flap ring and the aft primary rudder I believe are yellow - the area serving as the background to the black diamonds.

Yellow can appear as the same or very near the same as the light gull gray in B&W photos.

Comments welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Hey Duckie,

Had a pic of another one on my computer. Looking at this view, the ring around the cowling appears lighter, suggesting yellow. Also it goes all the way around. I doubt the squadron personnel would paint the ring grey on the lower area. I would believe they would mask off the entire ring in yellow. The Tail is anyone's guess, my belief is that it was yellow with black Diamonds, although I can't find any evidence either way.

Hey Dave, that was my guess also re the cowl ring. I don't think they would over paint the white underside gray either. The -3's later on in the late 60's wore yellow on the tail as your color photo shows.

I'll give it a day or two to see if anyone turns up anything. If not, I'll go with "our" gut feeling! :icon_lol:

Dave,

It appears to me that the cowl flaps are lighter due to specular lighting as the flaps are opened and at a different angle to the sun than the cowling.
