Sailplanes

jmig

SOH-CM-2025
I recently read a thread somewhere about sailplanes/gliders. It seems that RW sailplane pilots find FSX's experience to be very realistic.

Anyone have any opinions on the best sailplane/gliders for FSX? They can be either freeware or payware.

WARNING:: Backup your exe.xml file !!!!

That's rather odd.
It didn't do this on my installation.
The entry was properly added to the bottom of the long list of items I have installed in my exe.xml.
But you're right.
It's always a good idea to make copies of the major files before installing anything.

You're welcome to some copies of my exe.xml's
I might have the original somewhere.
Otherwise I have a long list on my current one that you could probably edit down.
PM me with your email if you want it.

Copy and paste that into an empty .txt (Text) file, save as "Exe.xml" and done.
</launch.manualload></disabled></filename></descr></simbase.document>

Can't edit my previous post without the board software f++++++ up the formatting...

Forgot to mention:
Copy everything inside the "HTML Code" field.

Also, I don't see the "forbidden magic" in editing irrelevant files like the exe.xml... ;P

- Edit: #@**!

The FSX default glider actually is very good, but it can be upgraded with a new FDE and improved instruments specific to gliding needs.

Cumulus X is a must, but use it by setting up wind conditions in the FSX weather options and find some nice ridges in the Alps, New Zealand, North Wales, The Rockies, Hawaii, etc to really expeience some scenic and exciting flying.

Get the freeware LAK Genesis 2 Glider by David Rowberry

FSX Model http://www.flightsim.com/kdl.php?fid=129851
Patch http://www.flightsim.com/kdl.php?fid=130064

There are several interesting missions around the net that set up specific routes and conditions which adds additional interest.

Best of all is to use these things in multi-player, it's so much more involving to have not only to navigate together, but also have to fly in these conditions, no option to simply go over there, but find a way to get over there without losing altitude. Better yet use FSRecorder in a few sessions, share the files and then fly multi-player with the recordings playing as AI.

Then of course there is the excellent Aerosoft Discus Glider, a superb payware add-on that extends the gliding experience even further.

There are other apps such as Aerotow and WinchX which provide more realistic launch methods.

Many freeware FSX updated aircraft from Wolfgang Piper's site, but amongst the best is the Blanik.

The SZD-30 Pirat by Michal Puto is an excellent soarer John and the price is right. :ernae: At Simviation:

Thanks Cazzie for mentioning my Pirat. jmig - there are some problems with my sailplane in FSX SP2 WITHOUT Acceleration. It's behaves wrong on runway. I have no idea why :/

Lost my aicarriers 2 after installation. Is this the Exe.xml problem?
I can't seem to find Exe.xml. I pasted above into Word document and tried to save in Main FSX folder. No luck. Please help.

Okay, exe.xml does not go into your main FSX directory.
It has to go into the same directory where your fsx.cfg is.

Usually this folder is located at:
C:\Users\"Your Name"\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX
(Insert the name of your windows account in "Your Name" above.
For example, mine would be
"C:\Users\Dain\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX")

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dain. I tried to find FSX.cfg before ( I'm using Win 7 64 bit). I get as far as C:\user\my name. Don't see application data and I opened all available folders (contacts, desktop, downloads, favorites, links, my documents, my music, my pictures, my videos, saved games, searches, tracing) some secret win 7 quirk? Thanks

Yep, you need to make "hidden folders" visible.

Open "My Computer", at the top, click Tools, folders options, then click the "View" tab and click the "Show hidden Files, folders and drives". Now you'll see "Application Data" available.

By default Microsoft hides those folders and files from users.
You need to turn off that option.
Then you should have access.

Here is a link for how to do that:

Thanks Falcon. Win 7 had the "show hidden folders" in control panel. I found FSX.cfg! I'll try to fix the exe.xml thing tomorrow. Thanks again.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of the specified FSX glider fields ?

Greetings
Dieter
