I'm looking at enhancing the terrain for FSX and was wondering what is better Ultimate Terrain X USA or FS Genesis HD Terrain Mesh for the United States?

If you read the descriptions for each on their respective websites you could probably answer that question yourself. UTX USA is a complete makeover of "textures", landclass, waterclass, rivers, coastlines and roadways based on current highway data. FSGenesis HD Mesh is the "framework if you will that those textures are mapped to. It supplies the Highs and lows of the physical terrain you fly over.

So it really comes down to which one you want to enhance more the ground textures or the physical aspects of the terrain.
 
FYI There are numerous different meshes available. I use Pilots which seems OK, I used to, many moons ago, have Genesis but my licence ran out. I found that one put many airports on weird raised areas so not sure if they fixed that. Also at Simviation I blv there is free mesh which may suit your needs especially if you are not interested in the whole world as you can d/l specific areas.
 
If you need a mesh, try FreeMesh. It's not quite as detailed as payware ones, but does help in other parts of the world (the US is already rendered at 38m resolution out of the box in FSX).

OrbX has the FTX Global products on sale for a few more days. While Vector is allegedly a bit memory hungry, it will at least provide global coverage.

Or go for Ultimate Terrain X, although a bundle of all their titles will provide less global coverage at higher cost.


If a simple texture change is in order and FTX Global is not an option, look no further than Aimé Leclercq's textures. The best thing about them is that they are free!
