Screen Resolution

hello Kris,
the only differences in mine are in red;

[MAIN]
ShowLogo=0
NoWarnNot256=0
Maximized=0....i didn't see this in you entries...try adding it.
HideMenuNormal=1...if you want the menu bar, press ALT
HideMenuFullscreen=1
Location=396,183,1044,717....mine=-5,-29,1287,751
my primary monitor is also a 48 inch TV
set at 1280x768 in desktop properties/settings.
not sure if that would make a difference.
also, the 396,183 tells me that the upper left corner
of the reduced window was not
in the upper left corner of the screen.

the first thing i would recommend trying
would be adding the Maximized=0
if that works, great.
if not, we keep fishin' until we get it.

just curious, what is your actual display screen resolution?
right click a desktop blank space
click the properties in the menu
click the settings button

by chance, are you running more than one monitor?

sorry for the way i present questions
and especially for the step by step
how to do it basic instructions.
i don't mean to act or sound condescending
or anything of that nature.

So many subjects and an actual active thread here! How amazing!

funny, i was thinking the same thing.
i don't rally see this happening in the other forums.
or for that matter, this one in the old days.
make a slight step off topic
and someone might jump all over you just for fun.

Ivan, your 196 comments are most gracious and appreciated.
but, let's leave it at that.
i can already feel my head swelling.
all i have to do is look at my body of work
and i instantly come down to earth.
one stinking aircraft over a year in the making....WOW!!!
and it wasn't even my idea. it was Dave's.
honestly, i had never heard of the thing.

wondering if the Dauntless3_2012022 beta
is the one you are referring to.
sorry to hear you are bored with it.
she is soooo close.
i have no doubt that she would be
gratefully accepted and appreciated by the community.

With so many subjects already in a single thread, I am guessing that no one will mind seriously if we continue to wander a bit.

The Arado 196 you built is quite an excellent aircraft. It stands on its own merit.
Regarding the "Body of Work", I don't think I agree with you on this subject. If we are discussing developing add-ons, I would much rather see a fellow build just ONE really great project instead of a dozen mediocre ones. There were a few folks out there who pushed out a new aeroplane about every couple weeks or so, but all of the products had serious problems. My opinion is that the one excellent aeroplane gives the who community a worthwhile new toy. A dozen mediocre ones just give the community something to download to waste bandwidth and then leave unused.

Regarding the Dauntless: Yeah, she's so close, but so are at least a half dozen others in the workshop. I wish I could work to finish up some of them, but can't keep my attention focused long enough to really finish anything. There are a LOT more projects that are much closer to completion.

- Ivan.

i completely agree.
it's not like there are thirty people responding to this thread.
i mean, so far, the topic keeps coming back around
and i hope that Kris is getting his questions answered.
if not, at least we're working on it.

once again, as to the 196, i greatly appreciate your comments.
coming from the Master Aircraft Builder, they are high praise, indeed.
you, sir, have set the bar for excellence.

also, thank you for setting me straight.
i hadn't looked at the "body of work" subject from that perspective.
i had simply forgotten the old adage, quality, not quantity
i guess what bothers me, is that i have so many others
that i would like to do and so little time to complete them.

no doubt, you know what i am talking about there.
the "Pre-Release Version of a Serious Oldie" comes to mind.
among many others.

one more thing about the 196,
for those who might be interested,
it was a collaborative effort.
Dave came up with the original idea,
the panel bmp and most of all, inspiration.
also a little bit of :a1089:
(it was the lipstick that really got me going on the project)

Ivan provided the air file and a much improved wing.
Ivan and hubba also provided beta testing
and serious, no holds barred, critique.
there was much needed encouragement by one and all.
not to mention, there are the authors of the gauges that i downloaded.

so, you see, it wasn't just me, it was a community effort.
just the way it should be.

hey Kris,
i wanted to let you know that i've been using
your gunsite ever since you posted it.
the more i use it, the more i like it.
thanks

Lipstick, pip stick
wait till you see the fussy pink key board hand cuffs for the A20 project

Not to mention the black web panty hose for the Liberty ship project :a1310:

Dave :violent-smiley-031:

and what for the do17?

or....the A-30 baltimore?
or the fletcher class destroyer?
not to mention the ijn carrier.
it goes on and on.

better go find some gold lamme stretch pants
and cork wedgies to go with that whip
if you want all that done.

and i still need to get all the gauges in the cfs folder lit.

jeez

Smilo,

I am glad you like the gunsight ..... It was the one I always used when I was actively flying CFS1 in a Squadron.

As to your questions, although I did not post it, I do have the line item (Maximized=0).

My actual screen resolution is 1440x900, so if I fly full screen or maximize the small windowed pane, the planes seem slightly stretched (from a left-to-right view).

I am viewing the game from the screen of my laptop (a very old [computr wise] Alienware 17" notebook).

Never a problem on how you post your assistance ..... Are you kidding me ...... I am so very grateful and I thank you and all for the suggestions thus far given.

Regrettably, the game still reverts back to the small window when I exit and start it back up.

I think someone mentioned something about potentially having a document that explained the line item entries of the combatfs.cfg file?

Maybe that might provide an answer?

I even tried making the file "read-only".

While this saved the settings, even though it was set as I had last left the screen, when the game started, the small screen was back as it was, but the combatfs.cfg file did not have the location parameters changed.

My guess is that it has to be something else or per chance there is another file that is being used that needs to be tweaked?

Sorry, throwing everything and the kitchen sink out there. :banghead:

my, oh my, your vision must be great!
i have to run my secondary 17" monitor at 800x600
just so i can read documents.
and i still have to work at it.

cfs was designed to run on the old 4:3 resolution.
the newer flat screens are 16:9
so, consequently, images will be stretched.
this is especially evident in the oblong gauges in cockpit view.

that was me.
after searching several hard drives,
i finally found it. or at least an abbreviated version.
according to the document, changing
Maximize=1
will do the trick. unfortunately, after trying it,
it does not work. at least, not for me.
what it appears to be is a record of whether
the game was last closed in full screen or not.

while experimenting for the past hour or so,
i found that if you scroll to and change
FULL_640=0 to 1
the game will start in full screen mode.

above the FULL_640=0 entry is FULL_SCREEN=0
when i tried to change that one and started the game,
i got the old cfs error message and the game shut down.
i am currious if you get the message too?

i found a few other interesting quirks,
but, will hold off unless you are interested.

Hello Dataman,

This may be a silly question, but what are the properties of the shortcut icon on your desktop for CFS?
Is it starting "Normal" or "Minimized" or something different?
I am not certain that this would have the effect you are describing, but it might....

- Ivan.

Smilo,

my, oh my, your vision must be great!
I have been wearing glasses since the 3rd grade kind sir ..... I am as blind as a bat, but I wear my reading glasses when flying (gives the Enemy a scare)! :jump:

so, consequently, images will be stretched.
this is especially evident in the oblong gauges in cockpit view.

I use to fly "pipper" view, but after a few years in IL-2, I enjoy the "cockpit" view and now find it more enjoyable in CFS1.

I changed this value and then started the game. It started in a small window as it normally does. I exited the game, went back to the combatfs.cfg file, and it had reverted back to the value of 0 (as it was before) so like the location setting, the game seems to have it choices for me! :banghead:

while experimenting for the past hour or so,
i found that if you scroll to and change
FULL_640=0 to 1

I got the same result, but the value was set back to 0 once I exited the game

My value is set for 2.
When I set it to 1, the game starts, but when you try to fly, I got an error
When I set it to 0, the game starts, I am able to fly, but it starts in the small screen

Ivan,

I am running Windows XP Professional and the icon is set to start in a "Normal Window" ..... The other choices are Minimum and Maximum I believe.
I have not yet tried those options.

i was just thinking that running at 1440x900 would make
everything incredibly small and hard to see.

I use to fly "pipper" view, but after a few years in IL-2, I enjoy the "cockpit" view and now find it more enjoyable in CFS1.

sorry, i don't know what "pipper" view is.

Ivan may be on to something.
set icon properties to Maximum.
i have several machines and many cfs installs and icons.
oddly, it works on some, doesn't on others.
go figure...i'm looking into it.

The resolution isn't very bad, wearing my reading glasses of course! :encouragement:

"Pipper" (if I remember it correctly) is the "gunsight" view (i.e. no cockpit) ...... Just the gunsight on the screen.

As for the icon properties, I changed it from "normal" to "maximized".
The only difference was that the game started as if it were going to start in a larger windowed view, but it went back to how it always is, no change.

As for this topic, I thank you all for your research and suggestions, but I think it has run its course.

You Gents have invested enough time and I will just get use to playing in a full windowed view (as I am too lazy to adjust the window each time I fly.

Thank you once again! :jump:

gotcha. Cockpit view/HUD/Full view (toggle) W on keyboard.
i like my modified HUD

same here. also noticed that in icon normal, when the game starts,
i can go directly into free flight flying by tapping the space bar twice.
in icon maximum, i have to mouse select free flight, then, space bar to fly.
i'm going back to icon normal setting.

also, while playing with the combatfs.cfg in a F: drive install,
i was, finally, able to duplicate the revert to small window syndrome.
even after i did the things i was telling you to do.
aggravating.

maybe for you buddy, but, this is little issue is starting to piss me off.
it's turned into a challenge that i can't let go of.
i will not be thwarted.

You Gents have invested enough time and I will just get use to playing in a full windowed view (as I am too lazy to adjust the window each time I fly.

not quite yet.
believe it or not,
this kind of stuff is almost fun.
stay tuned.

you are most welcome.
i completely understand

thanks for the opportunity.
with some persistence and a bit of luck,
we'll get this little demon figured out.

in the mean time, i've noticed that the sun is out.
no small feat for this part of the world.
where's my shades?
i think i'll go outside and maybe head into town.
i've got some errands to run.

Traa laa!!!

...I GOT IT!!!

i couldn't figure out why i could retain
a stretched window in some cfs installs and not others.
i even did a fresh cfs install
and started making changes,
one at a time, test, change another,
test, change another, test....and so on.

it turns out that installing CFO does the trick.
BUT, you also need to enable Restore Window
in the in flight Menu/CFO/Options
