Sedate Gentlemanly Flying

Aye, she is a true low and slow beauty.

I am working up two propwashes for it, as not all of the props have yellow tips.

New propwashes for the Swallow

The main texture, G-ADPS, has a two-blade all-black propeller, while all other have a two-blade black propeller with yellow tips.

Attached is a zip with both prop washes, the all black propwash goes in the main texture folder, the one with yellow tips goes in all the others.

Please amend your aircraft.cfg for all textures under the UI_variation=?? as follows

prop_anim_ratio=1.05

Facinating reading, Paul. Thanks very much for taking the time and effort to document the building of the Swallow. :wavey: It makes me wonder if an FS2004 aircraft can be built using other 3D modeling programs such as Blender, Anim8or, Metasequoia, etc.

If you can export to a standard DirectX X file then FS2004 models are possible from any tool.

With FSX the format is a bit more complex.

I think the main texture for APDS has yellow tips, EI-AFF has a black prop in the texture.1 folder, the rest have yellow tips.

Should anyone be interested in using 3D canvas for FS9 or FSX, here's how we did it.
Thanks for posting the links,Decapod. Very impressive and difficult task-making. I've had some "non-flightsim" friends by and we viewed the pages together, they were blown away to see how complex the art of sculpting kinetic plasma could be. (There is no solid aircraft in there, only an intricate and time consuming assembly of zeros and ones....)
Did you ever keep track of how many hours it took to create the Swallow..?

You know, reading that...I'm reminded of other how-to descriptions.
Let me describe to you, as best I can, how I see what you do:

Do you understand?
We are extremely grateful, and not a little amazed.

Well done, old chap.

It is definitely an art. You need to know your tools.
I've been using 3D canvas for 8 years and built 20+ steam locos and various rolling stock and scenery models for several train simulators so I've had a bit of practice.

As for time taken - as you can see from the tutorial it started over a year ago. I had most of the model completed after probably 10-15 hours, it was the remaining 10% tweaking that took 90% of the time. I took several breaks but the total would probably be hundreds of hours.
I was intending it to be FSX only to start with but it also worked with FS9. I also had to learn about 2D panels, VC and flight dynamics with it being my first FS model.
The next should be easier.

Magoo

The Pobjoy Cataract and Niagara were used in many pre WW2 British aircraft
several off which are modeled for FS9 - The Swallow , Ted Cooks wonderful Comper Swift and Fleet Shadower , Dave Moly's Short Scion, Jens Mono-spar
all used the Pobjoy.....if you have ever heard one run you would forget it in a
hurry (We are still trying to get one of the Swallow owners let us record it.)
They were (and still are) little jewels of engineering....when they run they sound like a sewing machine. As you can see with the Swallow the gearing allowed it to utilise a large diameter prop, but in the case of the Swift it made the aircraft faster for racing. Like the 180 Hp Bombardier (NOT anything to do with Canada) in the Auster AOP9 we are hoping to provide a true sound set of this rare engine.

OK without Goggling yourselves stupid can anyone tell me ONE US aircraft that utilised the Pobjoy???

Cheers

Leif

Anyone remember which WWII British bomber prototype had Pobjoy engines?

Swanson Fahlin SF1 had an 85hp Pobjoy R.

The Martin 162a, better known as the Martin PBM Mariner, but the 162 was a quarter sized flying 'proof of concept'

An American helicopter also had a Pobjoy R engine, the Landgrag Model H2

The Gwinn Aircar had a 90hp Pobjoy Niagara II

Google isn't my friend, but Jane is

This one......the Shorts Stirling.

This half scale prototype was designated the S.31 and first flew in September 1938.

Best wishes,

Martin

Not surprising Short Bros used a Pobjoy, they bought Pobjoy.

I often wonder with all of the replica aircraft being built around the world if someone might built a replica Short S.31

Thanks for the correction decapod, I got it right in the screens, but missed the fact that texture.1 was EI-AFF, the proper one wirth the all black prop.

Most enjoyed the dissertation on the construction. :applause:

A pointy nosed Swallow. Tried her out and enjoyed it imensely. A space made at the front of the hangar. Thanks for this rare and interesting little charmer, Paul. It's a keeper, your hard work and generosity much appreciated!
