Seeking some understanding of Mega Sceneries

OK, i am about to re install FSX so i can add Accelleration... and i am thinking of getting some scenery improvments.....the Megasceneries for California which are quite large and detailed.... and the VFR Generation X series for the UK, which are also huge and very detailed, the geo for Yosemite looks nice...and i have added UT for both USA and Europe....

the VFR sceneris are as i understand it mostly 2D photo overlays, does anyone know if they add 3D buildings in the correct locations.... or if they somehow tell the autogen where to put the generated structures? i am assuming they do... but i have had some bad luck with some older photorealsitc add ons, they look nice in theory, like one for my small town in colorado, for Pagosa Springs, but it looks strange with just the 2D photorealistic buildings but they are totally flat :)

just wondered a bit how this works....

also i have an external back up drive i just added and it has tons of space, as compared to my main system which currently is running both FS9 and FSX and is a bit crowded lol. is it possible to say put the texture folder or the Scenery Add on folder in a seperate drive fromm the main install? i am thinking not.... but just was curious about trying to move things around a bit.

Also i am thinking and trying to understand how adding these major add ons affects FPS, will it drastically affect the speed the sim runs, to add the high def sceneries? i was curious about that impact too as i have a mid range system with an older vid card, FX 7600, but i do have 3 GB of RAM now so i am doing ok with my install now, tho i expect Acelleration will help. thanks for any input on this. much appreciated.

I have the VFR England scenery, and it is a massive improvement! You just get a flat photo view,no 3D stuff, but it looks awesome from a few thousand feet up-get too low & it gets blurry but it is a real improvement.
I beleive it CAN be installed on a differnet drive to the main FSX install

The Horizon VFR UK scenery doesn't have autogen, but it's been worked on by 3rd party developers I believe. It is however very nice and comes with a very good mesh.

The Aerosoft VFR Germany scenery comes with scenery and autogen, this isn't to be confused with the Aerosoft boxed UK VFR scenery, which is just the Horizon VFR scenery.

The only Megascenery I have is Hawaii, this comes with Autogen too.

Most scenery, if it has its own folder structure, can be moved onto a different drive, you just need to alter the address in the scenery.cfg. Certainly I used to have the main body of Horizon files on a separate drive.

yep, i gots those already thanks ..that blue sky project is what started me looking further. They are really nice. they do have one for Pagosa and that is the one that has no autogen and that got me thinking about ..

a. maybe trying with the author's permision inserting some
b. looking at the more detailed and developed sets
c. asking for advice :) so thanks so much. really appreciate the feed back from everyone.

Nick, does Mega Scenery Hawaii have real Autogen? Trees and smaller houses, too? I have seen some addons to it on avsim.com, I like to fly at Oahu, any comment on the frame rates with it, compared to default Oahu?

I got MegaScenery Hawaii X, and i can definatley tell you that the framerates of the MegaScenery Oahu gives much better frame rates than default FSX Oahu.
Only thing that bugs me is the default FSX trees SUCK! they don't match properly color wise with Oahu.
