'Shooting the Duck'

Wow, I had forgotten about this thread! (Note that I started it before the whole 'alleged event', which should have never happened, began). Thank you all for the comments! The aircraft is extremely photogenic, at least that I find...personally I can't get enough of it, as I've been a long-time 'Duck fan', and there is finally one that I really, really like.

Speaking of the way she sits in the water - I didn't do any .CFG tweaks, I simply installed the FSX Aircraft.cfg files that come separately with the original download. (Note that with the FSX Aircraft.cfg files installed, you have to change the Panel entries in the J2F-4 duck Aircraft.cfg file, erasing the 1's, otherwise the J2F-4 variants won't show up)

Here are some other screenshots I have compiled together of my favorite variant in the pack, a depiction of Chuck Greenhill's J2F-4, which was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the infamous attack, and is today painted exactly as it was at that time.

A very fine, and a very accurate rendition of the Grumman Duck, if there ever was one.

I did make a slight point adjustment to the float position to raise up the rear a wee bit. And.... I added the A2A Aircraft Factory Corsair sound set to complete my mods. Talk about big radial sound filling the house. Wow! What a model. Too bad about the big flap over this freeware. I hope it gets resolved soon as this is a wonderful freeware model.

Edit: Oops, I thought I'd posted my comment in the relevant thread, but I see now that one is closed:blind:. Don't want to derail this one and get it closed too. Sorry, everyone:redface:.

I thought it was determined that this "freeware" duck was in fact payware duck.
It walks like a duck, flys like a duck, but is it a free duck? I'm confused.

Please enlighten....

There exists some debate as to whether the freeware duck is a modified payware Duck, ie someone grabbed the payware and ran it through a mesh decompiler and produced this, I've seen it done before with minor changes to throw people off the scent, but the changes needed to produce the freeware one make it almost certain its a bonafida mesh, or in more simpler terms, the alleged rework to throw people off the scent is so dramatic it'd have been easier to make it a fresh yourself. Personally if your clever enough to make the changes then your clever enough to make your own, same mesh or not it'll be the mapping which will tell you the most, clones generally keep the same mapping, especially large surface areas. The legality and legitimacy of the above debate is still being discussed behind closed doors I believe.

I've been through the clone loop many times before, at one time it was about all I did at Alphasim, especially when a similar model suddenly appeared as freeware a few weeks after ours was released, only one was confirmed as genuine when the source files were 'accidentally' given away LOL, for a different platform it must be said, but it all got smoothed over in the end :), as I'm sure this will.

Best

Michael

Addendum, note to self, read all the thread before replying! [palm slap] apologise for partial reiteration of some aspects.

I've seen the texture mapping for both. They're not anywhere near the same. They're so far off that one takes one bitmap for exterior textures, the other takes three bitmaps to cover the exterior.

In that regard, case closed, those that 'bend' meshes with third party after tools are generally lazy...if they were not then they'd build their own...and remapping takes one hell of a lot of effort, on top of any mesh alterations. Too much work for scent throwing efforts IMHO.

This is great to hear!!! Now, can we have the topics re-enstated along with the file libraries files related to this? I was looking forward to getting this new freeware quacker.

I think the mods have to say what Michael is saying for that to happen

meanwhile - all around the boat

hard to do without striking the main float towards the nose - but it can be done

Thats called "flying" Sandman.. Nice work.. :) :) :)

I really want this bird...errr Duck. She looks amazing and really looks like fun to fly. I hope the links are put up soon. Great pics Heywooood. She sure is purtty

Remember guys, in order to get the plane back on the Avsimrus.com website (which is the only place that I am aware it was released), it is going to have to take the cooperation of SWingman to re-upload the plane, and Avsimrus.com to understand the circumstances that led up to them being told to remove it by Icarus.

As I have stated, I have already sent an e-mail off to SWingman, to hopefully get him to re-upload the aircraft to Avsimrus (and also urging him to contact them in reference to the comparison/quick conclusion reached here), or if not on Avsimrus, perhaps elsewhere. I have however not yet received a reply.

I hope it passes too as I will hate to delete it should the impossible be true...

I will not keep it if it was taken from Icarus in any way.

I have to say though, I wouldn't be posting screenshots of it if I thought there was a whisker of a chance that it isn't bona fide

Based only on my quick comparison that I posted in the other thread (How Are These One in the Same?), it was already plain as day to see they are two completely different builds. Willy's confirmation that the two have no texture-mapping in common, only seals that conclusion (thank you Willy!).

To fully understand just how much work, or 'rework' would have needed to occur, to transfer from the Icarus production to the freeware production - there is just no way that happened. Even if you study the lines of the bottom of the main float, or even the vertical tail fin, perhaps the easiest parts to 'get away with', the amount of faces/splines/what-have-you, are completely different, and make two different shapes between the two, one depicting the original design in higher fidelity above the other. No aspects of the modeled mesh nor the textured mesh have anything in common at all.

this is good news - now hopefully Swingman will return to Avsim.ru and we can all enjoy this nice roasted Duck...

Bomber_12th is correct in that the gear sounds of the F4F Wildcat would be totally appropriate for the Grumman Duck. They both had hand cranked, gear and chain driven landing gear set ups. No hydraulic rams on these birds to extend and retract the gear. The pilot had to hand crank them up and down.

Which is why I used the gear extension and extraction sound files from Lawdog's F4F sound pack when I created the Grumman Duck sound pack...which is safely resting in the FS2004 Sounds library right now.

OBIO

Doubtless and irrespective of the outcome of the investigation, it will appear on a certain planetary website in time......

Has a final determination been made by SOH staff regarding the accusations?

Provided the outcome shows no conflict between the two models, and in advance of that happening:

OBIO,
were the flight model tweaks ever completed?

When you get older and smarter, dull and comfortable doesn't seem so bad!!
