I know this probably has been answered in the past, but had no luck finding it. How do I convert objects to aircraft so I can strafe an airfield and destroy something other that a hanger?

Before modifying an airbase, make sure your scenery detail slider is set to 5. At that setting, all the ground objects, including aircraft and AA, will show up. If your scenery detail is not high enough there will be a paucity of targets at stock airbases.
You can set the slider either through the drop-down menu on the main screen of the game, or by running cfsconfig.exe. Any changes made using cfsconfig will only "stick" if you select "exit" from the drop down menu rather than clicking on the "x".
so before getting into mods of the airbase facilities, just check you are seeing everything there is to see
