Small plane and pick-up truck collide..

Sad... And I'm afraid, stupid at the same time. Airplanes ALWAYS have the right of way on an airport, weather they announce their takeoff or not. I had to study and take a test before I was allowed to drive on the airport grounds.
 
Ouch. My brother lives near there. I've been there a couple of time, visiting the Owls Head Transportation Museum. They have some really old planes there. And cars. Sad to hear this news.

Hey All,

According to the article the right side of the plane hit the front of the truck. How? Doesn't that mean the truck hit the plane?

Sad no matter what!

Very sad. I Googled the incident and found that the truck was authorized to use the runway and was also equipped with a radio to monitor air traffic transmissions. The airport rules are that pilots must radio when they take the runway, where they are on the runway and when they have cleared the runway. It is unclear as to whether or not the pilot made the appropriate radio calls and if the radio inside the truck was turned on.
 
Brian is correct, its an international civil aviation organisation ruling, aeroplanes always have right of way,as even in this day and age, there are aeroplanes that don't have to carry radio. I also have my airport drivers permit.

The responsibility is with the vehicle driver to ensure it is clear to proceed.

And even on controlled airports, people mess up. I was once cleared to cross a runway (While towing a plane) while a plane was on short final. Luckily for me, the controller was simulcasting on both the tower and ground frequencies and I herd her clear the plane to land. I immediately stopped not 2 feet from the hold short line and announced loudly on the radio I was holding short of the active. Rookie controller who read back my tow request and then forgot I was on the taxiway. After all was said and done. I got a call from the tower back at the hanger, receiving an apology for the screw up and a thank you from the supervisor.
