they have some with deeper tread, just to get a bit of extra traction, i made the classic mistake of thinking "ahh it's only snow, the bike'll cope fine", it did but only where the gritting trucks had been... dicey at best is an adequate summarisation :icon_lol:. i know in europe you can get snow chains and such, but here in the UK it just seems to be 'snow' tyres as i say. stopping as you say, is an art form :icon_lol:

Didn't the UK have to close all airports?

The snow situation just sucks. If Easyjet cancels my flight to Madrid in a few days, I'll hijack one of their A319s and fly there myself.

I've lived in London for twenty years and I've never seen it this bad before. Never seen snow this deep, never seen it stick around for this long, never had it this cold before. I've never seen a snow tire in London. A lot of idiots in London take their kids to school in designer 4x4's and think they will be ok. They aren't. There's nothing funnier than a Porsche Cayenne struggling for grip in the snow and sliding backwards down a hill.

Anyone who had any plans to travel out of London to stay with relatives are probably facing Christmas at home instead. The trains aren't running, the roads are closed. There were three people in my office today.

As a non-driver who has done all his Christmas shopping and was planning on a quiet Christmas anyway, I'm quite happy.

Snow..or rather "Winter" tyres are mandatory in many countries across the European continent. The UK and Eire tend to run all season tyres or summer tyres all year round. The reasoning behind this is that we rarely get enough snow/ice conditions to warrant needing a separate set of tyres, although that seems to have changed over the last couple of years.
A popular and cheaper option to winter tyres here are "snow socks" which are a set of 2 mesh cloth (?) devices (€75 a set)that are draped over the driven wheels of a car in order to aid with traction on very slippery/icy roads. They must be removed when travelling on gritted/treated roads or they will be damaged.
I've had no real problems driving during the cold snap with wide summer tyres on a RWD bmw...it's good fun actually ;P :)

1 thing i found funny was when they said in some parts down south they got the army in to help the police out with patroling and what not .. the policemen was on about how great the army vechiles are in snow and how such a big help they've been .... then they cut to a film showing this fantastic piece of kit that the army gets to play with .... a 30yr old run down, no mod cons and abosolutly knackered looking land rover! :icon_lol:

nothing wrong with them land rovers pal, they might look knackered but they do the Job, Pershore got to minus 19 centigrade last night... more snow predicted also... this keeps up we'll have a white christmas :icon_lol:

I'm back home from Munich! After 3 days!
What would have been a regular 2 hour flight ended in an adventure!
We should have left on Friday morning, but all flights to London were cancelled.
By the time it was evening, we heard that Heathrow would not re-open until the following morning. (Great pubs at Munich airport!)
Back to Munich, 1 hour on the S-Bahn to the city centre. We booked into a hotel.
Early nexy morning, the internet revealed still no BA flights to London.
Instead a train to Frankfurt (ICE, great!). From Frankfurt to Cologne and on to Brussels.
Eurostars from Brussels to London not running!
Night in a hotel in Brussels.
Yesterday morning, still no Eurostar tickets available, slow train to Calais. This was good, despite the snow, no disruptions.
Foot passengers on the Seafrance ferry to Dover.
Train home. Finally arrived! It was raining here, no snow (50 miles from Heathrow)!
I just feel sorry for the stranded passengers at Heathrow, who have no alternative means of travel, and have to stick it out until Boxing Day!

Could have something to do with the gulf stream giving out gradually. After all, London is further north than NYC and they have regular snow storms every year.

It's no better going the other way!

I seriously considered going away this Christmas. Thank god I can't afford to :icon_eek:

the gulf stream isnt on that side of the uk, its runs up the west side then goes up towards norway :)

It's not only the Northern Hemisphere

Auckland had a drought instead of spring this year!
Temperatures higher in some places, than ever measured!

Then, heading into December, a tropical high that produced sweltering humidity in the 90% range - normally this happens for a while in late January.

And then a week of solid rain, instead of summer!

The weather's gone beserk.

I just heard that Brussel's airports have ran out of de-icing fluid!
I blame the French, they have shut down the motorways for any heavy goods vehicles.

(ICE, great!)

I hope that's irony, keeping in mind that travelers who can't fly usually make taking a train in this country unbearable.
I fecking hate sitting somewhere on the ground in a train. Everyone just runs you over when walking past. Bah!

First thing to slide off the road in snow is trucks, so that's a totally understandable move.

First thing around here to slide off the roads are the idiots in SUVs that think four wheel drive makes them invincible. The big trucks usually do okay, unless they don't slow down either.

Don't poo-poo old Land Rovers, I recall a Top Gear episode a few years ago whereby they were testing out various fancy 4x4's over rough ground. They all got stuck in a muddy hollow of some farmers field. Who came to the rescue and towed them out of the mire? None other than the farmer in his 1960's Land Rover.

Hi Bjoern,
No irony at all!
It was the best train I've ever been on! And it wasn't late! It's not my fault that they are called Inter City Express! (ICE), just sounds ironic under theses circumstances. :mixedsmi:
Despite all the problems, I actually enjoyed the adventure back...something different.
(expensive until I get reimbursed)!
You can blame BAA for me having to catch a German train, as most flights out of Munich were on time.
Just not to London!

The ICE surely is a nice ride, but only when the carriages are half full. If they're (over)crowded, it's just as bad as every other train.

I'll take a Regional Express the day after tomorrow instead of an ICE for the trip to the capital. Just to avoid the pre-Christmas overcrowding. Urgh!
