So Long Old Friend

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
Don't worry...no one has died....well, that's not entirely true as there are thousands of people dying each and every day....but no one in my life has died....at least not recently.

The old friend I am referring to is my mustache. I started growing him just after my 12th birthday. In the nearly 32 years since his birth, I have only shaved him about 8 times. On June 4, 1987, the day I graduated from high school, my mom asked me to shave him off. I told her I would, but that I would never shave him again. Since that day, I had only shaved him twice.....only because I goofed up while trimming him....when I failed to put the guard back on my trimmer and took half of him off, there simply was no way to fix that...so, I shaved him off and let him grow back (which only takes about 2 weeks to go from nothing to full fledged cookie duster).

Well, working in a produce packing plant, food safety (as you can imagine) is high priority. And one of the food safety rules is that anyone with facial hair must wear a beard net to keep beard or mustache hairs from coming loose and falling onto the produce. Makes perfect sense.

I have been wearing a beard net with no problems. Until Wednesday...when I had to get a new one and found that the new style beard nets the company has purchased are super itchy.....it was like having my face wrapped in fiberglass insulation for 8 hours.

So, to avoid the itchy beard net...I opted to shave the 'stache. I was close to tears as I used my stainless steel Wahl beard and mustache trimmer to remove that superbly cool (though utterly gray) Booger Bush from my upper lip. Yes, I do look several years younger without that gray Woolybooger laying across the top of my mouth....but man do I look like a total tool!

Deb said that my mustache was not really that noticable anyhow....she said that the 'stache blended in with my skin since it was so gray/white.

Well...I need a smoke and a beer. And a box of Kleenex.

well, after a two year hiatus from having a mustache, I am growing mine back.....plus a goatee.....NC

Shaved mine off once for a couple of years. Eventually, I couldn't stand it anymore and grew it back... but it came back in grey this time.

Shaved mine off last month.. Had it since my cop and security days (the 90's), grew it right out of High School.. I was looking in the mirror and just decided I was tired of it and before I knew it it was gone, a mere memory!

Ugh, no way. I have to work outside part of the time.
It's single digit temps here again tonight, and looking like the same for the next month or so.
Won't go without my 'winter coat' of facial fur until it gets hot enough this spring to bother me again. :icon_lol:

In my case it's a little different. My wife doesn't mind one way or another if I have any facial hair. However, she seems to prefer if it's just a goatee. In my case it just grows back in about 4 or 5 days anyway, plus after a while, it gets rather itchy. Not only that, but I seem to kill a brand new razor after one shave session. I would by an electric razor if I knew the thing wouldn't blow a motor on my face. :icon_lol: Oh well, I digress. I feel for you OBIO, I miss mine when I have to have the baby-face look. If there is one good thing, I still have my smokes to keep my sanity when it's gone and I take comfort in the fact I know it will grow back. Besides, living in the desert gets cold in the winter.

Aussieman, as far as before and afters, I think if that were done and I posted mine, I may get a razz on the afters. :icon_lol: I look like I'm 12 or something to that extent. LOL

Best regards everyone, Jeremy

I grew a mustache when I was in college, then a full beard. Years ago I shaved it all off and have since kept it shaved.

feel sorry for ya buddy, people keep insisting i keep mine shaved, but i like my goatee... it gets to a point where friends will actually pay me to shave it off :icon_lol: but now i've given up removing or hiding the grey hairs on top of my bonce, well that means i can also have my goatee back! keeps the face nice an' warm in the winter... though once your nose runs and it's frozen it's kinda fun :icon_lol:

i wont shave for anyone or anything....in truth..part of why i left the fire department was over my facial hair,i had become an engineer,,no longed packed up and did entries ( unless emergency ,we had enough personnel)so i began to grow my beard longer and longer....then california made a ruling on facial hair length.. mustaches were ok..if trimmed..but you couldnt have anything along the jawline or on the chin..the issue was that the SCBA mask wouldnt seal...BUT before i even had the opertunity to discuss it with the chief ( who was new) he gave me a notice...shave or leave....he also gave up to 30 other guys ( volunteer/paid..we had a HUGE manpower pool)letters/notices.....several of us were on engines for the 4th of july celibrations...im not proud of this...but myself and the other three in my crew...just left our grass rig where it sat..and walked back to the firehouse and left in our cars,in total 5 engines had been left where they sat,and abandoned ...the town fire department now has 12 fulltime FF's and 5 volunteers......at one time there were 90 active volunteers on the active rollcall, and our chief..Henry Gietzen had been the Chief for more than 65 years,we were also..up to that fatefull 4th of july...the oldest all volunteer fire department west of the mississippi, those of us who did get paid for wildland were accualy state empolyees .........god...i go so off topic......

I shave my beard off about every 16 years....go without it for a week and decide to grow it back...

At that rate... it would probably take me 16 years to grow a beard... I'm part Navajo Indian and Native Australian. The rest comes from the British side of the family, well... with that mix, whiskers are few and far between. I can grow a decent mustache... but a beard, forget it.
