So, which version of MSFS do I use?

After a long time without a PC, I am now in the process of building a new one (slowly, due to my financial situation) - so within a few weeks I will be in the position to return to the virtual skies.

The question is, which version of Flight Simulator do I go for? While my PC won't be bleeding edge tech, it will be better than my previous machine which ran FS9 superbly, with all settings to max, and FSX reasonably albeit throttled back!

So do I stick with FS9, bearing in mind that most of my archived downloads were originally for this sim, or do I start from scratch and go for a proper FSX installation.

Any thoughts? :salute:

I bought FSX and Acceleration about a year ago. They are unopened in a desk drawer waiting for the day when the average PC can run it the way FS9 runs now. Perhaps another two years.

Install both. then you can always fly your favorite.:wavey:

Did that previously - problem is, the one thing that has got lost in the move to my new hovel were my main Flightsim install disks, so it's going to be a repurchase. My heart says FS9, but my head says FSX as this is where the bulk of future development is likely to be!

What do u call an average PC??
I think mine is an average PC and it runs FSX just fine.

I call it the ability to run FS9 flat out with only the most complex scenery causing framerate reduction and stuttering which is where I am at with a $600 I7 PC.

My (only my!!!) opinion. FS9 is still my favourite. I have also FSX but I don't use it anymore. My FS9 runs and looks good as FSX. And I like it much more ;-) There are a lot of addons to make it look like FSX or better.

My System

2,4 Ghz celeron
128 Mb ATI 9800 Saphyre Radeon
1 Gb ram

It's not as if it's a bank buster...
FS9 can be had for $30.
There's probably 1001 addons you haven't yet installed, many freeware.
(Much, much more freeware than FSX.)

FS9 can be made to look and run in spectacular fashion.
By the time you've "used up" FS9 there may well be another next-generation flight simulator on the market.
If not, by then FSX will be available for $10. ;)

This is my opinion based on my experiences with FS9 and FSX. My system is an older system (P4 3.0 gig, 2 gig PC3200 RAM, 512meg Nvidia GeForce 7600GS)..but not exactly a slouch as older systems go. I have FS9 locked at 25 FPS...really no need for more than that since the human eye will not really be able to see the difference. 99% of the time, my sim runs at 24.8 to 25 FPS..right on the money. Over some heavier scenery, it drops a bit but not much. Some planes...like the IRIS F-15 and EAP packages (not knocking IRIS or their work...superb stuff) really hammer my frame rates down to as low as 8 FPS. But those planes are few and far between and I have LOTS and LOTS of planes in my FS9 installs.

I have FSX Deluxe. Have installed it twice...and got horrible horrible results. Slide show!

I have my FS9 tweaked and modified to the gills....and it looks great for a freeware based sim. My screen shots look as good as some payware rich screen shots I have seen. I am quite happy with it.

Now, to be honest, I did not make any tweaks or upgrades to FSX...did not install the SP1 and SP2 patches which are said to greatly improve the performance of FSX.

If I had to decide between FS9 and FSX....I'd go with FS9. Tons and tons of freeware stuff out there, stuff I haven't even found yet! I would stick with FS9 for another 3 to 4 years and let FSX build up to the level of offerings that FS9 has. And if you can not afford to build a super system to handle FSX.....FS9 is your best pick. I have read thread after thread and thread of guys spending their child's college fund to build a system to run FSX on and still not being happy with the results....but, then again, I have read of people with marginal systems getting really good performance out of FSX...so much is based on having the right combo of parts in your system.

Go with FS9!

I have stayed with FS9 because I was happy with my GW3 setup and many mods, until something happened in the computer last March, and now Iam forced to use lower display settings, and limit my addons. Iam currently having a new machine built, and will be starting from scratch again also. I like a lot of realism and think FSX has more to offer in flightsimming, and will give it a shot.

Personally I fly in FS9 (serveral installs), FSX, and CFS3 (when I want to blow stuff up)*.

If your PC can run both and you have hard drive room don't hold back just tinker with both. FS9 has the best Freeware but FSX is making great strides thanks to people like Piglet. Both have payware but if you are just coming out of dollars down to get a new PC running you probably are not in the market to throw a lot of money in payware.

Well Andy, it all depends on the specs of your rig actually. Mind to elaborate?

get both. you're not alking about that much money. by the time those other guys have a system that runs fsx the way they want it too, they'll be grumpier old men. the number of available add-ons is already greater, but just not as much freeware. the real question is how important is the eye candy? fsx has more. take that away and they are very similar sims.

ROFL:icon_lol: Now, Now let's be careful with each other...to each his own!

My system cost less than $1200 and runs FSX at 40fps everywhere at max settings minus water at high-mid, Rise of Flight, Wings of Prey, X-Plane 9.40, and FS2004 beautifully. Their are others here that can say the same thing. If one were to simply buy the right equipment the first time and not scrimp, then go and get Nick N's guide to FSX setup, you would have an enjoyable experience with FSX and these other flight simulators (I guess you could call Wings of Prey a simulator). It would be unthinkable not to buy or build a system today that would not run all. FSX has so many features that you don't have in FS9 but why would that stop someone from having both. I have too much invested in FS9 just to toss it out the door. So I fly both and love both.

install FSX first, buy some of the FTX scenery (or try free Tasmania first), and fly the latest offerings from A2A or some of the others, and FS9 will pale into insignificance.
I used to be very happy with FS9 and all my addons, but found I just couldn't go back anymore. It's all so...simple I guess.
It has been removed from my system, leaving more space for FSX addons...

But they still come and look in on the FS9 forums...
Hey Jan Kees, I would've thought you'd painted everything they had on offer in FSXland - when can we expect another FS9 masterpiece?
Did you notice we just had an absolute flood of aircraft in the last week? ;)

But they still come and look in on the FS9 forums...

Gee is it illegal to read Sim Outhouse now?

If you think for a second because I'm reading this thread in this section that I want to go back to FS9... :banghead:

Ahh, this PMDG J41 flight is awesome. Not that you would know. :173go1:

OP: If you ask this in the FS9 forum, they will suggest FS9. If you ask it in the FSX forum, they will suggest FSX.

Do you have to sign away your sense of humour when you register FSX? Musta' been a looong upload for yours.

I look here only very occasionally...
FS9 masterpiece? Sorry, but never again, you've had your share.
Besides, in FSX I can do things you can't in FS9.
On the other hand, try my latest for the warbirdsim P-51B, convert everything to bmp (you can do that, right?) and enjoy those? I think these are still in 1024 x 1024?

But I'll stay out of this forum from now on, it seems to upset you too much...
