So, which version of MSFS do I use?

Let's keep it civil and friendly. I don't want to have to close a thread or take actions against any members...but I will if I have to. The "which is better" thing has been done time and time again..and there is no right or wrong answer. Any member of this site can freely browse, read and respond in any forum they wish....I have stuck my nose into the FSX forum more than a few times.

Well Andy, it all depends on the specs of your rig actually. Mind to elaborate?

At the moment it is an empty box!! I am, quite literally, starting from scratch and will purchase the necessary components over the next month or so as budgetary considerations allow - the first purchase was this weekend, and was actually a 22" HDTV which will double as my monitor (here, if anybody is interested). And it will allow me to get back in skies immediately, with Il-2 on the XBox!!

My old system was pretty much on a par with Obio's, and ran pretty much as he described it - FS9 was an absolute dream to run, FSX (with SP1) ran, but barely! The only reason I am even considering FSX is because of some of the more recently released addons by Piglet and the guys over at CBFS - if they were in FS9 (or ran in FS9) it would be an easy decision!

Looking at going the AMD route, AM3 socket, Athlon II chip (initially, but upgrading as prices fall) and 2-4 GB of RAM. Hard drive prices have fallen so much, that a chunky HD is a given, which will allow for the inevitable multiple installs for GW3 etc.

talk to txnetcop. he can help you get the most bang for your buck

Due to the amount of payware and great freeware I have for FS9, I have both on my main FS rig. FS9 runs super great on my FS rig due to my upgrading it for FSX.

I just have too many old favorite a/c in FS9 to let it go! Still lots of flying hours in it to go!

I moved all my FS9 a/c,that I wanted, over to FSX then dumped 9 so I have what I consider the best of both.

I look here only very occasionally...But I'll stay out of this forum from now on, it seems to upset you too much...

I don't know...perhaps I should punctuate every single sentence with a smiley!;)
You've done great work in FS9 over the years Jan Kees;);)
and I for one am grateful ;)
and haven't yet gotten through all of them :)

Please do come back and visit, there are some great ongoing threads in here:):)

Think this thread has probably served the OP's question...from now on, we're only going to hear about which is the "superior" product, and how anyone not using "your" version is a potential retard.

I'm lucky , FS9 to FSX , to many brilliant works from sides ..... we also have to look at the few who still design and paint FS98 .. Square clouds  now those guys are tough!

it just all depends on a few things :
- do you have a computer that will allow you to run FSX to your liking with whatever addons you whish to get and on whatever settings you wish to run it ?
- what do you have involved already in FS9 as far a payware addons go and how much time/money are you ready to involve in a new sim when it comes to paywares/settings/freewares to get it running as well as you had FS9 going ?
- is FS9 running just the way you want it to run enough for you or do you really need all "bells and wistles" along with all the future new addons for FSX .

these are mostly the questions i think you must answer for yourself before you can truly make your choice ... just my opinion though .

Well I have both and like them both. I have so many addons (payware), that I just can't stop using FS9, and there are so many fun addons for free that it makes it extra hard to give up FS9. I do like the mission setup in FSX and the default scenery really looks great, but the AI traffic has to be cut down to run other things, so it is kind of lonely in the sky for me. But then you have moving AI ships and that is really fun and realistic. I don't want to get into a argument just thought I would throw in my 2 cents.

Well, having looked at some of the spec levels being mentioned over at the FSX forum it looks like I'm sticking with FS9 for the moment.

Just one final question; does anybody know if Piglet's recent FSX releases will operate in FS9?

To my knowlege, Tim has made the jump to the FSX SDK, so his releases are "FSX Native" and not backward-compatible.

I use FS9 For now

FS9 runs well on my HP with a GEforce 9100 card. I visit the FSX forum and what I see is the same planes being re-done for fsx from fs9, those new planes coming out are mostly payware, I have FSX but do not run it..maybe someday. FS9 is a great sim.

Cheers

SOH sometimes suffers a thread
on which MS flight sim a man should wed:
FS9! one side shouts!
FSX! The other half pouts -
I say - I don't care, I just take' em to bed!

Well I fly mainly in FSX. I originally deleted FS9, but soon reinstalled it. There were just too many things not yet available for FSX. I have some favourite aircraft, which simply do not work in FSX, as well as certain scenery packages which are not currently available in an updated form, eg Emma Field, Orcas Island.

Honestly I don't understand why, with some people, it HAS to be one or the other. I'm quite happy to have both reside on my system. Hell, last year I even reinstalled FS2002, for a while.

However if I could only have one sim it would have to be FSX. Even if it could only be run on modest settings I still believe it to be the preferable choice. The main reason? The amount of quality addons, both payware and freeware, currently available, that will only work in FSX is quickly expanding. Do you really want to miss out on such great addon's as A2A's Piper Cub, P-47 and B-17? Or Pacific Northwest, from Orbix, IMHO possibly the best scenery addon ever released for Flight Simulator.

One other thing nobody has mentioned yet I think is that the OS makes a big difference to how each sim version runs. I had only limited success getting FSX to run smoothly on my latest FS PC. It had been delivered with XP but was eligible for a free W7 upgrade.
I would not get rid of my FS9 installation at this point simply because much of the scenery I have has been made primarily for that sim and some of my personal favorite airplanes also did not really work in FSX.

After the W7 upgrade I ran FSX again just for kicks, and without making any changes I was stunned how much smoother it ran.

So IF your favorite AC and sceneries are FSX compatible I'd at least get a copy of it and give it a try. If they are not or only partially I'd stick with FS9 and build it up with all the great and mostly free additions.

Busy weekend ahead

So it's finally here, the big build! The new PC goes together this weekend; AMD Athlon™2 X4 Quad Core 620 2600MHz AM3 CPU, GeForce Mobo, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 1 TB hard drive, Radeon HD4550 512MB graphics - and a fresh copy of FS9 on the way! Think I'm gonna be busy for a while!
