sorry but anyone who votes no or maybe shouldn't be here....just my one mans opinion. I think its sad that there are some who come here for I believe the downloads and such.....discounts that are offered. I think it should be membership run. Just saying.

For clarity, the Flight Server (SOH.net) is the multi-player server that also supports Teamspeak online chat, the RTWR, and its own set of forums, and is our "Go to place" when/if this main server is down.

Not to be confused with the server we are on here, the SOH.com server.

Should have been a simple yes or no option as well. If someone says maybe, the chances are, given past experience, what they really mean is no.

The only reason to keep it would be to the update issues of last year. A few times that was the only way to get info on the server. So do what you have to do and let move on. There are other ways to host teamspeak and such.

And yes Skyhawk I am only here for the downloads. Well thats not true now is it.

I fully support a nominal membership fee for downloads

Most freeware developers are against any kind of fee for downloads, including me. It goes against everything freeware stands for in my opinion.

Even as high as our bandwidth costs are, SOH will not impose download fees.

We will find ways to make our costs match the available membership support donations. This is no different than managing a household budget. Bills cannot exceed income.

I was in the midst of making comment to skyhawks, and was going to say somewhat similar to yours Milton. Then I decided not too due to all the formalities that came to play.

There's a lot more to the action of adding a "membership" fee for downloads.

A "Maybe" vote does not indicate I am here for the Downloads and Discounts. I do not fly online so do not use the online server. As far as dl's are concerned, it is a convenience but not the reason for visiting SOH. I find the forums better than any of the other forums online at this time. If there is enough interest to keep the flight server online, that's fine with me. I don't have any problem spending donation money. If there is not enough interest, closing it is OK too. The "Maybe" is more of an "Abstain" vote as opposed to a "Don't Care" as I think it's useful and I might use it someday, so I am giving my vote to the Admins to do what they think is best. Not voting at all is a "Don't Care" vote.

There is absolutely no need for, or thoughts to having any kind of required fees. That will not happen at SOH.

Thanks to our membership donations, we will persevere this year and seek out ways to manage within the means. This is our obligation and members need to understand our commitment to free access.

We have crossed the first critical half of the goal and have some breathing space to reach the end now. Thank you all for pushing this yesterday.

i feel i want to speak here myself,i voted no,and my reasoning is that i come to SOH for flight sim information, friendships, yes downloads, and i want to stress for information,be it a new plane thats out payware or freeware.
as for flying online,i tried it long ago and i found the people who were there that day to be rude and unkind to the newb so i havent gone back, and i also have NO want to fly "online" anymore anyway...to say that the people who voted no to the flight server shouldnt be in SOH, is insulting...

Although I have never used the multiplayer and/or teamspeak servers (other than when the .com server is down for maintenance), I think they are a very good service. My work schedule prevents me from participating in the RTWR, but I had a blast flying the Western Roundup last spring. Similar events would be super IMO, and the ability to connect with the other participants would make the event more interesting. I fully understand the need to reign in costs, however, and my "maybe" vote just means that I believe the .net server is a nice idea but not necessary to my particular needs. I know in the end the admins will make whatever decisions they need to in order to keep the main site up and running for another year.

Being down in the Basement BKA as the CFS2 fourm I don't get any use out of the .net other than when things go wrong with the .com. So asking me isn't much help.

Online flying is still something I want to do more of, more being more than zip which is where I'm at now. When I had a slower computer years back and there was a game hosting site with Zone in it's name with any number of flying groups active, I did have fun with it even if nearly all the groups seemed to have 'pilots' between 8 and 12 years of age and my FPS's were terrible. The novelty of not having to fly solo in FS hasn't worn off but it just seems that things conspire to prevent me having sections of uninterrupted time to do a proper sortie. When I did try the SOH server a couple of times to see if it worked from my end I was still alone in the great blue yonder since nobody else was awake that time of night I suppose but it did work, so I voted yes as I still anticipate making use of the service someday.

Are the bandwidth and other requirements for Flight Server (.net) anywhere near those required for downloads, forums, etc (.com)? It doesn't provide any duplication of services, excepting when the main one is down, and even then, it doesn't pick up the slack, since most people seem to wait until .com comes back online.

Does .net cost as much as .com? I thought I had seem something regarding how much .net was vs .com, but I probably made it up, since I can't find anything that looks like that now.

I can't answer the question but I can say we are seriously looking at Flight Server alternatives as we speak.

For me, if push comes to shove I would vote No, but that is being very selfish. Like Seiggie, I come here for the Forum not the d/l or online flying - although having said that - are the tutorials classed as d/l's?

Better give you my two cents worth. Although i have never used the multiplayer or teamspeake I voted yes to keep. It's another way of supporting our hobby. Perhaps someday when my life calms down I will be able to enjoy flying with others in our community. I know that I am missing another dimention in our hobby but I will enjoy the fact that others will be using it. When flight was released I did try out the live field flying with others. I have to say it was kind of a kick. The world "small world" was alive around me with other pilots ( some doing there thing and others trying to crash their planes into mine). So, if we can afford it lets keep it.

Goal revised down to ...

Ickie has been researching for a better Flight Server deal and came up with a savings of $3000. Therefore the Donation Drive goal has been reduced from $14K to $11K. Thank you all for your feedback, input, and support. And, thank you Ickie for your efforts on this. :applause:

There are a couple of simple reasons why anyone should fly online:

1. So you might learn something -
  • whether it's a flying technique (I, and others have taught many people how to fly ILS & GPS approaches using multiplayer),
  • geography (lots of ways to discuss the land we fly over just like the Smithsonian's "Aerial America" series)
  • to compare aircraft in real time and conditions

but most valuable of all is the same reasons REAL Pilots fly with others...

To share something you enjoy with friends
(and if you don't have friends you may make some)

obviously I voted "YES"
