Solid State drives

Just wondering if anyone has installed one yet. If so, can you give us a review. I was reading some reviews at Newegg this morning. Some bad but mostly good. Incredible speeds compared to hard drives with no noise (duh). The price is getting managable also. Sounds like the near future will have us throwing the hard drives in the bin along with the floppys.

Thanks Kilo. I knew it had to have been discussed somewhere in here. I just search the wrong forum.

As a supplement to this and the other thread, I supervise and manage several networks with differing requirements. We invested in 40 some laptops with SSD's, for a specialized use on our network. A year later I have removed all of them and taken them out of the inventory. They simply have not worked out as promised. Some of the reasons why:

  • Difficult to build the images and clone them over. Took specialized training and lot's of trial and error (we were never happy with this).
  • They broke. They broke hard....and we had no chance of recovery. There are lots of utilities for recovering from magnetic media.
  • Platform we selected was for lightweight, but by the time we added everything we needed we were as heavy as the old fashioned magnetic media (not necessarily a SSD issue, but for us it eliminated the advantages).
  • Maintenance support was just not available--we had a higher than average failure rate.
Now, I caveat all of this by saying that we were running a platform where the SSD was the primary drive. I suspect using an SSD as a secondary drive might well be a good option, but I would not invest a lot until I was comfortable with it.
