SOLVED! Specular Textures in Windows 7

Here you go, a tweaked P-38J and L for anyone to test. Drop the .m3d files into the p_38j and p_38l folders in your aircraft folder and overwrite the ones already there (make backups!) Although the L model uses a reflective texture and no specular texture, I have added a general specular gloss which I think adds to the effect of the bare aluminium. I also made the glass reflective - you can enable this effect in the shaders.xml, post #13 in this thread shows you what to do. Enjoy!

My tutorial on this is nearly finished, I should have it uploaded by the end of the week.

David, been messing with Win8; things can tend not to work: think newer is not necessarily better! As you experts say, XP still king?

Yes I agree its best to have XP, but its always good to have a migration pathway. (just in case I end up in a situation where I don't have the luxury of a stand-alone PC for CFS3! :banghead: )

Hi Gecko

Thanks for doing this!

I tested your files and made the changes mentioned in post #13, but I can't see any difference so I assume it doesn't work on Windows XP with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card?

I noticed that the ModelEnvironmentMap section in your shaders.xml was different from mine so I pasted in the whole content, but I still didn't notice any difference. :blind:
Is it easy to so the difference with or without specular textures?

Have anyone tested this in Windows XP using a ATI video card? :isadizzy:

Cheers

Could you post some before and after shots? It could be the hardware, or if you aircraft detail settings are too low the effect might be disabled. The only other thing I can think of is perhaps your specular textures for the P-38 are missing or painted all black.

EDIT: Did you turn on the specular map enable? I only referred to it in this thread and neglected to actually show how to make the change, check post #23 in the knowledge base which will show you what needs to be done. http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?40606-Projected-knowledge-base/page2

Hope it helps.

Daniel

Were you testing the files I uploaded to this thread or just only the shaders mod I just mentioned? If changing the shaders file is all you did, then yes it can be reduced, that's what this thread is all about. Try testing the two P-38 models I attached in this thread in combination with the shaders adjustment and see if your results are different. If you've already done that and it's still too bright could you post a screenshot of the P-38 so I can see what's going on? It's quite hard to guess with things like this without seeing it.

No, I wasn't aware of that.
I'll also check the aircraft detail settings and test again!

Thanks Daniel! :salute:

Glad you got it sorted! You can make the effect more or less intense by hex editing the specular values in the m3d (for large adjustments) or by brightening or darkening (or playing with brightness and contrast effects) the specular texture.

I have completed my tutorial on this topic. It covers absolutely everything I've been able to learn about this topic. Uploading soon.
