• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

Some things.

I belong to a small group of writers who gather weekly to critique one another's work (and drink, but that's another story). One of the hardest things to do is to explain to a fellow writer who poured his or her guts out that the story just isn't finished or needs a major rewrite. It's especially tough when you know that the story in question is a thinly veiled account of their own life. "Yes, I see that the main character is devastated over the death of her mother... but I'm just not sure that I believe it." Talk about dancing on thin ice...

What we've put into standard practice is the "feedback sandwich". It goes like this: start with something positive (there's always something good you can say if you dig deeply enough). Then lay out any misgivings you have or suggest things that could be changed. Finally, reinforce your faith in the writer and your enthusiasm for their efforts.

Whether you write, paint, do airbrush art on the side of vans, or build simulated airplanes, this is the kind of feedback you want, trust me. To give criticism is to indicate you're invested in the outcome. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't take the time to comment on a piece of work unless I either liked it or thought it could be improved. Either way, the point is to keep the author motivated to constantly improve, not to quit in frustration.

Of course, there are a few people who can only feel good about themselves by dragging others down into the muck for a good wrestle. Seems like they'd be happier doing something else besides poisoning our tiny well... might I suggest a career as a TV pundit instead? :icon_lol:

I too agree 100% ......
You must have posted just before me, Bill. I too find it hard to get someone to deliver that "Sandwich" for fear of hurting my feelings.

Well put and I believe this is how it should be. Be positive and constructive in all you say and do.

Great post Kevin! :applause: I thoroughly agree. Unfortunately, the forums are full of clueless jerks who have no concept of respect for one's efforts or civility. I have been a moderator on internet forums, and have been absolutely appalled by some people's posts! Constructive criticisim is one thing; being downright rude is something else. All we can do is consider the source and move on. I'll say one thing about SOH... 99% of the folks posting here are polite and demonstrate respect and encouragement to the developers. This is still the best FS forum on the net!

Kevin:

Insightful and well though out comments. As a past member and developer for FSD and now independent I have lived and undestand perfectly well your comments.

We have to maintain civility and people have to understand that as developers we try to accomodate observations and rewquests some are quich fixes other take time, but we try to do oour best to meet most expectations.

Again...... BRAVO

Bill, this is an excellent contribution to constructive criticism. Thank you for taking the time to explain it.

As a business manager and supervisor for many years, we used the 3 up, 1 down rule (3 positives for each constructive criticism), Every "shortfall" had to be accommodated with a plan of action, training, budget, and specific measurable objective. Yes, I used to spend up to 40 hours on some evaluations. :)

Regardless of the "trade", we all are learning our ways through life, in steps, and and need the guidance of more seasoned, experienced tradesmen. Whether our level of expertise is grade school level just starting, or post graduate, we all need the benefit of other insight, feedback, perspective, and encouragement.

We are fortunate here to have the whole spectrum of "tradesmen", and we need to understand where a developer is in their "career" when we provide feedback.

The key is to encourage and promote "growth" since we all benefit by the contributions. This is best done using the kind of guidance that you and Gibbage have provided.

Thanks for investing the time and for your many contributions.

I agree Milton totally, if it wern't for sites like SOH we'd all be much worse off in sharing idea's and fixes!
Ohh yeah and for showing off our skills and new models lol

the simple fact is the market CANT support Aerosoft PBY quality on every product.

This is the line that stood out to me. Speaking for my self I have spent so much on buying/trying new planes that disappoint I am now at the point where I will only spend money on the very best stand out products, which means the above statement tells me the market cant afford to build many planes that I'm actually willing to buy.
