Some wonderful old ALphasim Freeware planes that I wish I could fix

I was on Skype, "talking" to Smoothie, and got to talking about some of the old Alphasim freeware birds that I would love to be able to pass a magic wand over and fix them so they would work fully in FS9. There are quite a few:

Douglas Dauntless....one of the best Dauntless models ever made...no prop and some odd animations

A-26 A and B....wonderful planes

B-25J Mitchells

B-17s....a nice range of models.

Felixstowe F2A...neat flying boat

HP Hampden

Pe-2...very cool Russian plane

And on and on....planes that no one else has done that would be so nice to have in FS9.

Oh, if only there were a magic wand shop close by.

OBIO,

Jens B. Kristensen has done a freeware rendition of the F2A, that is much better than the Alphasim counterpart ----> http://www.flightsim.com/file.php?cm=SEARCH1&fsec=0&fname=F2A_V10.ZIP

And Roy Chaffin has also done a nice B-25J, with VC, for FS9 ---> http://www.roychaffin.com/rcs-panels.html (Scroll down on the side-bar to "Packages" and it is the second package on that page.)

SOH Has a very nice A-26 Invader.....

And here is a very nice HP Hampden by that master of Classic british aircraft, Ted Cook, or "Flying pan handle" :-D ---> http://www.britsim.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=162&func=fileinfo&id=823

Craig :)

Hi OBIO,
What do You think about the Lockeed Harpoon ?
In the past I made a set of Italian textures for this old Alphasim plane, but I remember there were a lot of problems in the mdl, such as invisible props.......
:wavey::wavey::wavey::wavey:

Another one is the Vicker Valiant B2 (it was a one-off prototype for a low level pathfinder - it was another one of those aircraft that just looked right, in a way the B1 could never quite manage), which looks fine ..... apart from the crew entry door which has just vanished. No way this aircraft will ever be done by anybody else.

Craig :)

:salute: Craig, I find myself in agreement with you there, except that the SOH A-26 Invader is by far the best version I've had/have the pleasure of flying!
In fact the only author capable of producing a better one would probably be the gentleman/gentlemen behind this one.

Obio, maybe you haven't had the pleasure of flying the RCS B-25J RAF for FS2004. What ever we could do with Alpha's model won't put it on a par (and I'm not knocking Alpha, they've produced many exceptional models). The RCS B-25J has an awesome soundset; the interior sounds give me the creeps for authenticity.

The only RCS B-25J drawback is the lack of skins, (at least, I haven't had any luck in finding any) but I think I heard Smoothie mentioned somewhere here.
"I was on Skype, "talking" to Smoothie..." so that's why we've been rendered weathered duckless...
Hmmm...(icon for mischief icon); HAF C-47, weathered Grumman 'Murphy's' Duck, and now the RCS B-25 in U.S Airforce colours...the mind boggles...Smoothie?

I remember having a similar conversation about this the other day. Some of the Alpha models are quite accurate in the looks department such as the F6 lightning and Sea vixen . I have had Alot of fun repainting and refining the old freeware F.1/F.3 version of the model but unfortunately the F.6 and Sea vixen suffer from the vanishing canopy trick.
Such a shame

Its only drawback is the lack of skins ......

For me the only B-25 is Briefing Time from MAAM; a great model, the money goes to a worthwhile cause, the support has been superb AND there are plenty of skins available.

The reason why I listed those models was because they are all better than the ones from Alphasim, not that I want to dis-honor Alphasim, its just that there are better models out there. And I agree with you Andy, the MAAM-Sim B-25 looks much better than the freeware version, and I intend to get it when I can, I am just slightly broke right now... :redf: :engel016:

Also, @Nigel, you are right, it is the best available A-26, I know that all too well.. :D

Craig.

Me I think. you were asking about Sea Vixen models for the Yeovilton project.

:wiggle:
Now that's one project I'm definately looking forward to Andy. Will the scenery include the museum area?

Good place for the Alphasim Swordfish too. That's certainly a model where a little bit of the 'SOH touch' on a good basic model might work a few wonders.
Exhaust, smoke, weathering, sounds, fiddling and tweaking...everyone's enthusiasm, beginning with OBIO's, worked magic on the Grumman Duck!

all right my ears were burning.... what'd i miss? :icon_lol:

ahh yes the RCS B-25, great aircraft, a veteran of my Hangar, regularly fly that beast in formation with a couple hurris or spits...

back on track Alphasim.... yeah theres a lot i wish could be fixed...

Yep! And guess what, Dumbo here has been flying round in the 1.6V of this supership for the past few years.:icon_lol:
Now, with many, many thanks to Craig, (icon:at least 2 crates of beer:icon) just downloaded V2.5. US markings, amazing 'parked' scenery and WOW spectacular VC!

Smoothie, I might pick up the airbrush and take a shot at the Duck to take a little of the load of ya shoulders buddy. Won't be up to your standards though. What do you reckon on the Alphasim 'Stringbag', did you know that for a while it was refered to at the MoD as the 'Greek Ship' due to many of its specs being written around orders for the Royal Hellenic Airforce? It also had the dubious honour of official specification 'TSR II'. Ouzat! :wiggle:

i knew it was planned to be in RHAF (Precursor to the HAF) use but that never materialised, instead they got other types... shame the stringbag would suit HAF Markings... and the operational theatre there being mostly water... i.e. the Ionian, Cretan & Aegean Seas....

... shame the stringbag would suit HAF Markings... QUOTE]

Hmmm...(icon:that's a thought that never crossed my mind. Honestly!:icon) ...kind of 'what if?' paint scheme Matt, if I get the gist? I bet OBIO would love adding a nice little touch to the cylinders too. As per Duck.
What were you thinking of Matt; silver overall, slightly shinier metal areas? Or were you thinking more on the lines of that nice little 'Santorini ΘΗΡΑ' Gladiator that haunts my aircraft list?

bit of both i think, silver dope on one and Santorini ΘΗΡΑ style on another....

(icon:rubbing hands together in eager anticipation for what we are about to receive.:icon)

better get shuffling round to see what I can come up with for sounds then? :wiggle:
