Woah, this thread is about a devs frustration with his livelihood being substantially affected by theft. How is this not real life? Your personal situation sounds pretty rough, Mr. BananaBob (and I say this with all due respect), but for Graham this is both not trivial, and it's real life. We all have our individual situations, but please don't trivialize somone elses.

You need to go back and read my original post I merely gave MY opinion on why it was trivial, since when is someone's opinion wrong? It's exactly that, not a truism. I was just trying to put it into perspective is all. Geeze, forgive me for speaking my mind.

Bob, I am also living and expressing a real life problem here. Just to give you an idea of what has troubled me - in real that is - before the hackers uploaded my software at piratebay, I had a steady stream of customers paying for my product. Since yesterday, I had over 1000 hits on my site and zip buyers. This afternoon alone, I had over 300 hits so I got curious and I googled and checked stats on my server where these numbers were coming from. You guessed it, piratebay. So, what does mean for me, it probably means instant death to my only form of meaningful income after retirement. Although I may not make enough money each month, at least I can, like you, try make rent, pay phone bills, and feed my kids.

And no, I am not arguing with you, I am simply stating facts about my frustration. To call this thread trivial is simply denying us developers common voice in furtherance of this issues. It's a long shot, but hey, it's a try. As they say, if you can't swing the bat at all, you'll never hit the ball.

Bob, I feel you man.Rough times in Michigan also, like never before.Now I,m going thru my midlife crisis and I should get me a convertible or a Vrod to cheer me up for going bald..instead i,m growing older and poorer.And I cant go thru the night anymore without having to wake up and use the bathroom.I,m pissed and I,m growing bitter by the minute..and now,on top of all that I have to put up with the internet pirates .But on the positive side, I,m glad I don,t have cancer yet.:ernae:

I'm just saying it's trivial to me, from what I've seen, not everyone has had the same experiences and I should have thought of that and been more empathetic but when you've seen the worst of humanity, it's hard for me to then to compute, in my pea brain that this is life threatening. When people have nothing much more to lose, this can be trivial. Good luck though and hopefully you'll never find it to be trivial.

I appreciate this thread. Nice work guys, and thanks for sharing. It has lots of meaning, at least in my life. Anothers path is often the best teacher about our own.

The honest people will still pay for the products, and the thieves wouldn't have paid for it anyway.

That's what I think as well.


And even if it's hard to accept for some, multimedia piracy is and will always be an integral part of the internet.
You can still have your occasional successes, but all in all you're just fighting windmills and wasting your precious time and energy.
If you're running an internet business, you're just as vulnerable to theft as the real-life shopkeeper. Sure, you can code the mother of all copy protections, but if someone *really* wants your product, he/she *will* find a way around it - no exceptions, just like with just about everything in life.

If you still want to succeed with your internet, just focus on your honest customers and reward them with excellent products, appropriate prices and thorough support instead of chasing thieves down the avenue.


Still - believe it or not - outside of our fairly safe flightsimming asylums, the internet is just as black-grey-white as the rest of the world.


Oh, and in case anyone needs a final solution to end piracy: Pull the plugs of modems all around the world. No internet, no multimedia piracy.
