Spec maps

Could someone give me any pointers on creating (diffs), spec maps, color ranges and the process's needed for creation? If not openly, a pm would work too. I'd really like to get to know these process's if someone would like to help me a little. A point in the right directions even

For me it is a matter of "try and error". Black is matt and white is glossy.

Cheers,
Huub

What Huub sais.
Other than that: The RGB channels defines the spec color that gets multiplied into the base texture, the alpha channel defines the focus or hotspot. bright greyscale alpha gives a wide focus, dark values an expressively focussed hotspot.

Simply desaturating the colors of the base texture gives me a black and white spec map that doesn't look too badly.

Advantage: It's simple and quickly done.

There's my bumps.

Specular experimentation :mixedsmi:

I added the noise to the spec layer instead. View image properties for noise settings.

Nothing set to any specific areas just yet. I'm currently playing with color and noise variations within the specmap.

Unfortunately this experiment is not coming along as I would like. Due to my RL schedule, I can't devote the time needed to really come to grips with the process and get things to look aesthetically appealing. Right now the complete aircraft is covered in a green spectrum. Which, when flying from spot view, just looks wrong. I've got plenty of learning yet on techniques and shading ahead of me before I feel comfortable.

It's quite the process because it basically involves painting the aircraft several times. And if I were playing baseball, I'd be on 2nd base still :running:

As I've said: Desaturate and done.

You could play yourself to death with all the possibilites of specs and bumps, but unless you stumble upon the perfect recipe by accident, life's too short to be stuck on one spec map forever. :d

I can relate thoroughly. My problem, I'm anal. And, my sponge is barely wet.
