Spitfire PL965

Dave, is your pilot repaint available? I like that the eyeballs aren't so 'buggy' on yours. ; )

Here you are. Credit to Bob Rivera as well. I've put blue eyes on this one. The reason the original eyes look so bulging is because the original had concentric black and white circles for the iris - anatomically dodgy!! Coupled with the skin tone of a week-old corpse - not pleasant!!!

Thank you Dave for the pilot texture - much better, and not so tan as the original Bob Rivera version. ; )

BTW, Dave, if you're up for it, a great companion repaint for PL965 would be the restored PS853, in its current colors (which are very close to that of PL965), that could be applied on the Mk.XIV model... hint, hint, wink, wink. ; ) Its flying again, as of today, following some repair work after the aircraft had its gear raised by accident following a landing earlier this year (which came not long after the aircraft had just come out of a lengthy and detailed overhaul). Some photos by David Witworth, taken today at Duxford, can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dwhitworth/sets/72157632420770843/with/9317022562/ As with PL965, the aircraft is finished in the same, extremely authentic, PR blue paint (different than what used to be widely used/thought to be accurate).

Some very nice shots of 434 John.

Just a few quick question for RA Spit owners about some issues I'm having with the MKIX VC mdls.

Does your triple air pressure gauge work? (Mine doesn't)

Does the tooltip for the radiator temp show oil pressure instead of temp? (Mine does, but not in the civil cockpit)

Is your oil temp tooltip in Fahrenheit rather than Centigrade? (Mine is, but not in the civil cockpit)

Do the radiator flaps work automatically when the thermostat kicks in, like on the XIV? (Mine don't).

I note also that when using the Civil cockpit in the MKIX (as per DaveQ's PL965 repaint) the altimeter (now where the Turn & Slip Indicator was) is confused between this and the T&SI, which is now not present! (the background texture for the T&SI is still present, but it has the hands of the altimeter).

Cheers

Paul

Hey Paul, I'll check on those other items you mention.

Regarding the gauge textures not showing up properly on Dave's repaint of PL965, I got the same problem and was just about to post the fix.

1. Open the Texture.PL965 folder, and then open the Texture.cfg file contained.
2. Within the Texture.cfg file, replace the current text with the text below:

[fltsim]
fallback.1=..\..\RealAir Spitfire XIV 2007\Texture.Civ_Panel
fallback.2=..\..\RealAir Spitfire XIV 2007\Texture

From now on, the gauges will have the correct textures.

*Alternatively, if you want the original wartime gauges, but still with modern radios (which will, however, also add the cannons to the wings within the VC as well), don't do as above, and simply remove the "CV" and "LR" from the title of the repaint entry in the Aircraft.cfg file - this happens to be what I've gone with.

Paul, regarding the issues you mention with the RS Spitfire IX, I've just checked all of those items and they are the same for me as well, so you're not alone. Regarding the radiator flaps, I believe they are tied to the airspeed, in all of the models, rather than the radiator temperature. You can confirm this by using slew, and notice how they will open/close the slower/faster you move the aircraft.

Thanks for the civ panel fix John.

Ah yes! The Texture.cfg. I keep forgetting about it's importance, and the use of and fallback textures!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with the issues I mentioned.

I looked a while back, but there appears to be no update or fix on the RA support pages, so I guess these minor issues got missed!

As for the radiator flaps, I always thought they were controlled by radiator temperature like on the real thing. (I could have sworn this was how it was done in FS9, and assumed it was carried over to the FSX version). Anyway, I'll do what you say, and whilst I'm at it, check the MKXIV rad flap behaviour as well.

(I'm pretty sure that they are closed on the MKXIV at start up, but on the IX, they are usually open).

Lovely shots of the H11 duo btw.

Cheers

Paul

Very nice! We can never get to many Spitfire paints! The new pilot texture is a welcome addition for the old, but still great Realair Spit package.

Talking about Griffon recce Spitfires, I did a repaint of PS852 in the scheme it had for the missions over China in 1951 for a few years ago. It should be in the library if any are interested.

PS853

Hey Presto - the Rolls Royce PR XIX!!

Has anybody got any information on the small badge by the door stencil? And can anybody tell me where I can find a sheet with the maintenance stencils for the Spit IX/XIV??

I'm interested. It looks great. Thanks.

Dave, thank you very much for doing PS853 too!

Regarding that small yellow box with stenciling below it, it points to an emergency jettison handle. You can see it a bit clearly in these photos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dwhitworth/8083143792/sizes/o/in/photostream/

I believe the text reads "HOOD JETTISON PULL"

Alternatively, here is a brilliant starboard-side view to go with the port-side view linked to above (shows some nice stencil detail): http://www.flickr.com/photos/dwhitworth/8320861845/sizes/o/

Thanks John, I'll mod it Monday (doing RW stuff over the weekend). Still not clear on the image over the emergency hood release placard though.

DaveQ

Sounds good, Dave! The yellow square isn't a placard, but just applied to highlight the center item as being of importance. What you're seeing in the center of the yellow square is a half-circlular indentation, with what appears to be a little ring that you pull to release the canopy.

Here you can see the same thing on another Mk.XIX:

http://spitfiresite.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/ESC00082.jpg

In this case, it appears to be covered by clear plexiglass (which is not present on the R-R example):

Brilliant, but as all too often these days, from 7 minutes on the stupid incidental music was completely ruined by the beautiful sound of the aeroplane and voice-overs. Now I'll never know the tune's name......

Graham.

PS853 uploaded here and at Flightsim.com. Thanks to John and you all for your contributions.

BTW I can't find a photo showing the stencil on the top of the cowl by the ?fuel tank filler. I assume it refers to the tanks size and fuel but without a reference I've omitted it. If someone knows and lets me know I'll add it and post an update.

Revised texture files uploaded here and at Flightsim.com if you'd like them. Very many thanks to John (Bomber_12th) for the PM.

Unlike most texture mapping this one wraps the file completely over the nose cowl so that it's possible to accurately place the stencils without distortion. Plus one to RealAir!!:salute:
