Hi guys

I am looking for a Spitfire for FS2004. Which one is the best? I would prefer a MkV and a MkIX...the price is secondary, quality counts.

thanks a lot
Uwe

I have both FS9 and FSX realair spits and :woot:dont forget the A2A MK IIIA, for $20 its a handy little airplane and a good time builder.

IMHO, go for the AH Spits first. They are the most accurate early model Spitfires and one of two MkVs on the market. The price is fairly cheap, and while the models are somewhat dated, the number of variants included is astounding. Justflight is selling the complete package at $30 US for the download version.
They also sell a Spitfire MkV and Tempest package for $15 US, but as I do not have it, I cannot comment.

The A2A Spitfire is a gem of a plane. No words are too good for it - the quality is that high. However, there are some inaccuracies in the VC, so if you are a rivet-counter, go for the AH version.

The RAS Spitfire actually disappoints me - I honestly am not sure just why. I think my biggest beef with it is the lack of reflectivity in VC. Maybe also I find the texturing too flat - I tend to like bright colors, but everything about the RAS Spit seems to be a light, faded olive color, from the pilot to the gauge faces, so I no longer use most of the stock textures.

Bruno Eskarvage (sp?) has done some VERY nice freeware Spitfires MkV for CFS2. They port to FS9 perfectly. They are availble right here at SOH.

Paul Rebuffat did some great freeware Spitfires MkXIV, also for CFS2. They make good FS9 ports as well.

EMatheson just said it all. When you want a freeware one; Bruno's is definitely the one to go for! The model has a decent VC and a really stunning exterior model. In the CFS2 division you should be able to find some additional repaints, like the one one the screenie by AGAS5.

Alphasim released their Spitfire package as freeware....MkVIII and MkIX included in the package I do believe. Looks decent, flies decent...and the price can't be beat.

Another one for Realair. I don't have any experience with any of the others.....never needed to worry about it after purchasing the Realair Spit....Overall excellent package.

Some useful comments and suggestions.

In the end though, I suppose it all depends on your budget & what Mark you are looking for.

If you want a good representation/selection of several marks for a good price, but are happy to put up with a few quirks & inaccuracies, then the JF/AH pack should suit you just fine. There aren't many repaints that have been released to my knowledge, but I know there are quite a few somewhere that could be. ;)

The Real Air MKXIV still stands up very well after all these years, and represents good value for money. This is still a firm favourite of mine. Good FPS and a functional, crisp & clean VC although perhaps lacking on some of the finer details but you do have the neat option of removing the gunsight and having modern radios in its place instead, as per some today’s airworthy examples.

The WoP Spitfire MKI is a good one too (I believe the basic 3D model was the one used in Shockwaves BoB ‘Wings Of Victory’). Despite having quite a few niggling shape & detail inaccuracies (which the Shockwave team have gratefully acknowledged and might one day hopefully fix), the model is still up to the usual Shockwave high standard with a clean, crisp & FPS friendly model & textures, and a nicely detailed & functional virtual cockpit as you'd expect from them.

I'm surprised though that no one has mentioned the Plane Design Spitfire XVI.

Personally, this is the best out there in terms of 3D model accuracy and detail (the shape is bang on, and beats all other Spits payware or freeware hands down). The VC is as detailed as possible, with almost everything clickable or switchable (even if it has no function in FS) and has everything you'd find in an original MKXVI. The FM has at least tried to model some of the quirks of the real thing (such as adverse yaw, along with the gyro effects of the prop), which the others don't appear to have. In retrospect though, it's possible this was a step to far, as it seems these features fustrated a lot of those who bought it, and put a lot more off buying it. A real shame!

As you can see, they were working on the MKVIII, IX & PRXI (all of which I was lucky enough to get early stage models of), but it seems sadly development has dried up. I'm really hoping Ed and his team can restart work on them, as it would be criminal to let such work go to waste.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Paul

I'd say your spot on, the VC in this particular Spitfire, being very detailed and appealing, the texture and reflectivity are a bit disapointing.

Couldn't agree with you more.

I have tried most of them (except the Plane Design one) and IMO the Realair Spitty is the best..and I am about to upgrade it to FSX as I have always wanted a decent MkIX (which is only in the FSX version)

at the risk of highjacking the thread, please, Please, PLEASE could someone post a step by step guide to porting Bruno's Spitfires from CFS2 to FS2004. I know it's supposed to be so "oh so simple", but I'd really appreciate having some detailed instructions that I don't have to try to interpret for my first ever try at this,
thanks in advance,

For the Mk.V only it's hard to go past the 'Sky Unlimited' offering, a tad dated today but easy on frame rates and fairly representative of the Mk.V at a very reasonable price.
IMNSHO the best 'Spitfire' is the Mk.XVI by 'Plane Design', while the best value for money award goes to 'Aeroplane Heaven', a little dated for sure but still a favourite of mine.
Here's hoping the 'Plane Design' Mk.VIII becomes a reality ........... :applause:

I didn't see it mentioned here... and I know you weren't specifically looking for this particular version, but if you would fancy a MkXVI, (Very similar to a MkIX) then Plane Design has the absolute best model, hands down. In terms of quality, visuals, and realism... it gives the RealAir MkXIV a run for the money. Both are excellent flyers and eye candy extraordinary!!

OOPS!! Sorry Wombat... didn't see your mention of the MkXVI... My Bad

All you have to do is drop the plane folder in the 'aircraft' folder,
same as fs2002/4,drop the gauges and effects (if any) in the 'gauges' and 'effects' folder, then in the aircraft.cfg file add the lines for the user interface

eg

description=Messerschmitt ME109-E
ui_manufacturer=Messerschmitt
ui_type=ME109E Emil
ui_variation=JG/3,Wilhelm Balthasar

and finally, delete any weapons and dp files from the plane folder, and
check the planes sound folder is aliased to something you already have on your setup if it doesn't come with custom sounds

think that about covered it.

Yago9 has some beautiful repaints for the RealAir Spitfire in the outhouse.

I would go so far as saying that the RealAir Spit IV for FS9 (The only one I have), is one of the all time greats even after a couple of years! Just check out Yagos repaint screenshots!

I happen to be the happy owner of:

AH spifire pack
A2A MKI
RAS Mk XIV

I like Spits... I may say.

None of them is a disappointment, this need be said, but when I feel I want to get the real thing I jump into my RAS Mk XIV although this not my favorite Mk.
