'Starring Martin Landau....'

Am I the only mortal who thinks this series is virtually CRYING for a motion picture (obviously a remake) ??

I had models of the Eagle and the Mark IX Hawk from the episode "War Games". I couldn't tell you what happened to either of them if my life depended on it. If you fly the Orbiter sim, digital models of both are downloadable from orbithanger.com and probably also from Avsim. There are also several models of Moonbase Alpha for Orbiter of varying levels of detail. The Orbiter community is kind of divided on science fiction models. Obviously, a lot of the users got their interest in space flight from watching shows like Star Trek and Space 1999, but many of them are hard-core about flght realism and there are a fair number of astrophysicist involved with the sim who take their flight models VERY seriously. Sound familiar?

Something I found out only a few weeks ago on PBS: Martin Landau was offered the role of Mr. Spock in Star Trek, but rejected it because he thought the character's lack of emotion would limit dramatic potential. I have Mr. Landau's interview on tape talking about the subject. It's very hard for me to imagine anyone other than Leonard Nimoy as Spock. I did like Zachary Quinto's portrayal, but IMO Leonard Nimoy is the Sean Connery of Spocks.

Ive always been very fond of 1999, but sometimes found some of the episodes a little rambling and psycolgical esp for a 10 year old kid esp after the action pack'd preview you always got at the beginning of each show, but would love to watch some now.
I also thought the Eagles looked pretty cool as well, had a kind of logical look about them, if you wanted a transport or hack for everyday duties, sort of like a C130 or DC3 for space, then the Eagles looked just right and not to fantastic, there are some models for FS2002/04 out there somewhere.

I used to read Starlog religiously, and this description [rambling and psychological] was a criticism of the series early on, especially of the first season. It was also a criticism of UFO [our library has it on VHS], another series I loved, but in that case I think the studio really wanted the Anderson people to move the series in a more action-adventure oriented direction, which is exactly what we saw in Season Two of Space 1999.

The genesis of the Eagle is recounted in the Making of Space 1999, and you are spot on. It was conceived as a multi-purpose utility craft, using technology reminiscent of that already being used in the space program, taken to a logical next level. Now, seen from 2011, a lot of the machinery on Moonbase Alpha looks almost retro [I watched Alien the other day, and the Nostromo was full of CRT monitors.] but I think the spaceships, especially the Eagle, hold up very well.
