Stuttering, the bane of my existence

Well, it is with regards to MSFS anyway.

I hadn't booted up MSFS for a weeks now, which is not uncommon for me. I am running a Ryzen 7350X3D CPU, 64gb RAM, 4790 card, on a MSI MAG X670E TOMAHAWK motherboard. With this PC, one would think that I wouldn't have any stuttering, but you'd be mistaken, sadly. There are numerous YouTube videos, many of them claiming that their settings are the best, period. Yeah, whatever. This drives me batshit.

The last time I had the sim running, the add-on Lossless Scaling seemed to have all but stopped the stutters. But like a bad dream, they're BACK.

If there was a app that would magically cure this crap, I would buy it, gladly. It seems a stutterless MSFS is still beyond my reach. Grrrrrr. NC

Hey Chief,

Some things you might have already considered, but worth mentioning just in-case:

- In the past, have you ever used the DLSS Swapper tool? If so, it's worth remembering that every time there is an MSFS update, you once again have to use the DLSS Swapper tool to replace the outdated DLSS file that MSFS always re-installs, with a more recent version. I've noticed makes quite a big difference. I think it's version 2.4 that MSFS always installs, which is more than two years old now, where as with DLSS Swapper, I'm using the latest, 3.7.2, which just came out about a month ago.

- If using Lossless Scaling, with the latest version of the app you will want to make sure that under Frame Generation it's set to "LSFG 2.3". Also, make absolutely sure that you have your settings set properly in the Nvidia Control Panel for your monitor. In your Nvidia Global Settings, the max frame rate should be set at your monitor's refresh rate, and in the individual Nvidia Program Settings for MSFS you must set the frame rate at half your monitor's refresh rate if you use X2 mode in Lossless Scaling, or 1/3 of your monitor's refresh rate if you use X3 mode in Lossless Scaling (X3 is only good if you have a 120 Hz monitor), etc. If these aren't set properly, using the Lossless Scaling app can create stutters on its own. In my case, I have a 60 Hz monitor, so I have the Nvidia global setting set at 60 fps and the Nvidia MSFS setting set at 30 fps, and Lossless Scaling set at X2 - in the sim, it always stays pegged at 30 fps, thus visually displaying a constant 60 fps, never wavering. I've come to like it better than the in-game Frame Generation, as it's less demanding on the PC.

- If you're not running Lossless Scaling and in DX12 mode, you can try using the in-game Frame Generation (make sure there is no cap on the frame rates in Nvidia Control Panel), but I would suggest to have it turned off if you're using Lossless Scaling.

- With the latest/updated DLSS, I find that using "DLSS - Quality" anti-aliasing to provide the best performance vs. quality visuals when using DX12 mode in MSFS (for me, using that setting also provides a completely smooth, stutter-free experience running ultra settings in VR).

- In MSFS, make sure v-sync is turned off - if you need it on, it seems to be better to turn it on in the Nvidia Control Panel instead (which is what I do when using Lossless Scaling).

- In MSFS, you can try reducing the Terrain Level of Detail setting to see if that reduces stutters - on ultra settings, the Terrain Level of Detail is set to 200, which is only halfway to the max capable, but is already quite high at that number.

- In MSFS, make sure to clear your scenery cache (if you have it on), and try running the sim with all AI traffic and ship traffic turned off and see if that does anything. Recently, I tried having the Global AI Shipping addon installed, and I was surprised by the performance degradation, even when I wasn't all that close to the seas/oceans, and decided it wasn't worth having.

All very good.suggestions, and I will check all.of them. I had forgotten about DLSS swapper, and I know I do not have the current one. I will check all the other settings as well, thanks.

I spent several hours, troubleshooting the problem. I updated the DLSS file, but no.change.

Finally said screw it and am in the process of a fresh reinstall.......again.

Some people have reported bad stuttering and freezes since last Friday over on the AVsim forum, but there seems
to be no common agreement on the cause or cure :

Personally, I haven't had any particular problems on my end, except for the occasional small freeze for weather or AI insertion,
but I've only flown a few hours here and there over the weekend.

Just a thought, it coincides with release of the latest Nvidia drivers. Try rolling back those to see what gives?

It obviously depends on hardware set up, but I've spent far too much of my life watching videos and reading posts on how to optimise MSFS. I'm at a point now where I do nothing in NCP and just use the in game controls. I also use Process Lasso as I've found that moving other apps to the efficiency cores on my PC reduces the temps quite a bit (leaving MSFS and Map enhancer on the performance cores).

Additionally, I've also found that I get a slightly sharper image using TAA rather than DLSS, but still use FG as I'm on a 4070 card. I haven't got round to VR yet, so that may introduce a new can of worms, but very happy with how it performs on the screen using 1440 upscaled to 120 in the game settings. I don't tend to track FPS, just a smooth playable experience, although I keep V-synch on in the game so I can limit FPS in relation to my monitor (currently set at 33% for a 165Hz 1440i monitor).

One of the things I've found when constantly tinkering is that I forget changes I've made to things. for example, leaving FPS limiter on in NCP then wondering why changes in the game don't do anything! for that reason, I reset NCP back to default settings both globally and for MSFS.

As Priller said, perhaps roll back on the NVidia driver. I haven't updated mine now for a few months due to it working well.

I'd love to know how much time I've spent tinkering vs playing in the past :ROFLMAO:

No stutters here on the old 537.70 driver , use DX12 / TAA .... no Ultra , and empty Rolling Cache ~

Chief, I occasionally get stutters with my system. However, overall, my system runs well. I think every system will, from time to time, get stutters. I recently checked my performance and found out that I am GPU limited. So, yesterday, I finally got around to ordering the RX 7900 XTX GPU that I had planned on buying.

I know that none of this helps you with your problem. I kinda agree with Neil (guzzler). Sometimes to much tweeking can be counter productive. There are a few basic "tweeks" everyone mentions, like setting Windows games to high performance. I use them, but stay away from extreme tweeks.

What seems to be happening, is once the rolling cache has loaded for a flight (I have it set at 20gb), things seem to smooth out and stuttering "appears" to be gone, or at least minimal. More testing to be done. Taking my time. I want things running correctly whenever my motion simulator arrives! NC

I found this Nvidia app very useful, it's only a Beta, but I found it works very well, it's light years better than the Nvidia Experience.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/software/nvidia-app/

I don't think the Auto tune function works with the DLSS Swapper, I found I had to revert back to the original DLSS.

There's a video on YouTube on it that is well worth watching:

It worked for me.
