Sunderland at War, Part I: the Bay of Biscay

Led Zeppelin

Charter Member
Available soon, there are still two missions to build.

This will be a 4 missions pack: 3 historical and 1 random patrol in the Bay of Biscay. Maybe I'll build one from Luftwaffe side (Ju88C-6).

It is dedicated to those who like flak and cold water :bump:

GREAT!!! I am Looking forward to this..

:applause: :applause:

I love wrecking British aircraft...:gameoff:

Thanks For these, Very Much..

Off to trash some Sunderlands

:salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:

I've nearly finished, I'm working on the Luftwaffe missions.

The Sunderland can suffer very heavy damages in comparison of the Catalina or Halifax, I've never been shot down by U-Boats flak yet.
The only time I've been shot down is when I engaged a Do24. I came to close to it in the worst position and it's rear gunner shot me down.

A great reference is Goss', "Bloody Biscay"
I have AeroJournal magazine n°30 (April-May 2003), in which there is an article about V./KG 40 which is a partial translation of "Bloody Biscay".

I also have also a special edition of "Le Fana de l'Aviation" wich is a nearly complete translation of "Dark Sky, Deep Water" by Norman Franks.

I have been, by Ted's new Flak U-Boat which is a a good representation of some of the later U-boat's defences.

I have also been shot down by a Kondor. those AI 20mm's are killers

Both books ar great finishing Bloody Biscay, I almost felt weeping for the crew of V/KG40 in the end when they were thrown to the lions at D-day!

As the missions I've build are random, I haven't met the Kondor yet... but if I do, I will suerly not try to shoot it down!!!

Regarding the flak U-Boot, it is survivable with the Sunderland... but you have to comeback home after the bombing run!:jump:

I think I'll add another mission to the pack. As airfields in Brittany were very buisy (Ju88C-6's, Fw190's...), allies decided to strike them in september 1943 in order to decrease the pressure on Coastal Command bombers and to reduce the strength of interceptions of raids directed on U-Boats pens.
The mission will be for the B24-D. On september 23th, Lorient recieved very heavy damages from a B17's strike and V./KG 40 had to moved to Bordeaux temporarily.

I've said it before...

I really enjoy the way histrionics are brought through to our sim... Bravo folks!!:ernae:

While looking for historical informations for this mission pack, I've collected enough stuff to extend it.

Finally, it will take longer to buld it as I plan to build a 'Battle of the Atlantic II: the Bay of Biscay'.

This will focus on battles that occur in the Bay of Biscay and around western coast French harbours from 1941 to 1945.

Cannot wait to fly them!! Go for it; take your time; and make them goooood.

Thanks for all those missions you have made.

Well 1943 and 1944 eras are finished and I've started 1945 and will finish with 1941.

Regarding 1945, I'm building a mission around 'festung Lorient' (festung = fortress). There were several heavy batteries to cover the harbor and sub pens and one of the most modern of the Atlantic Wall was on the isle of Groix ahead of Lorient.
This battery was made of two double turrets from Cruiser SEYDLITZ for a total of four 203mm heavy guns. They could fire 360° / 35kms and were guided by a radar Fumo 214 SEERIESE.

I've looked everywhere in the building folder and have'nt found anything so, does anybody know if this type of coasal fortification available in CFS3 (see pictures below)?
By the way, this research in the building folder was great, I found some really great and usefull ACC and ETO stuff there.

If not it is not a problem, I'm using a 105mm bunker facility.

Qui voit Groix voit sa croix...(elle était gammée à cette époque)

Hello Loîc,

I didn't find anything like this in the buildings folders, but I think it couldn't be so much
complicated for the "Bismarck" modeller (or other battleship) to export a twin gun turret from it, adding a bunker as support and make the building you need...
(it's so easy while saying) There is also a modeller that made very precise radar buildings, let's try asking...

Nice project indeed !

This project is getting bigger and bigger, I've collected many historical informations. The mission pack will be named 'The Atlantic Wall'.

It will highlight everything related to operations from Atlantic harbors and associated airfields.

Era 1: German invasion and their rush to capture major French harbours before the armistice.
Era 2: early RAF strikes against u-boats bunkers under construction and Luftwaffe attempts to struggle England just after the Battle of Britain.
Era 3: Bay of Biscay Coastal Command anti-sub offensive and allied strikes against sub pens.
Era 4: Allied invasion and Patton rush into Brittany with the help of partisans in an attempt to capture harbors.
Era 5: Operations above 'Atlantic Pockets'

There will be many, many different aspects of aerial operations (special ops, anti sub patrol, airborne ops, CAS, Air Sea Rescue, strike, escort, artillery spotting, pathfinder, night interdiction...). Some of them have been very rarely, if never, created in flight sim world such as minelaying or wheather recon for exemple.

Collecting informations takes hours and hours, the pack will not be ready before september if everything goes well.

Whew, LZ! This is an entire theatre of ops! It'll be stupendous when you're done.

Now I'll hold my tongue till you finish. No more "Are we there yet?" queries.
