Talk about a silly "breach of copyright" law suit!

One of my hobbies is fish keeping...as in fish tanks, aquariums....that sort of stuff. Been in this hobby for nearly 40 years (38 years to be exact...got my first fish tank for my 5th birthday).

I was on a fish keeping forum that I am an Advice Team member on and came across a thread discussing a rather silly copyright infringement suit brought against MonsterFishKeepers.com (a fish forum dedicated to keeping large fish) by the makers of the Monster Energy Drink. The suit calls for MonsterFishKeepers.com (which has been on line since 2002 and has had their name and logo registered since 2005) to stop using the word Monster as part of their name and to stop using a stylized capital M as their logo and to stop using the word Monster and the stylized capital M logo on products (stickers, t-shirts and such) that the site sells as a way to help offset the cost of running the site.

Here's a link to MonsterFishKeepers.com......read the post about the suit, look at the MonsterFishKeepers.com logo and compare it to the logo from Monster Energy Drink....and see if anyone could possibly confuse the two logos. There is a link on the page to a Change.org petition...please sign the petition in support of MonsterFishKeepers.com.

I know most of you could give a rat's arse about fish tanks.....but this is bigger than a fish keeping forum. This is about a mega-million dollar company trying to lay claim to a word and a letter (Monster and M)....both of which were in existence and in general use long before the company began. Monster Energy Drink had previously sued a small beer company because they had a beer with the word Monster as part of the name. What's next....suing McDonalds because their logo is a Capital M.......suing Miami University because their logo is a Capital M....banning Monster Truck Racing because they use the word Monster as part of the sport name?

I have signed the petition, sent a letter to Monster Energy Drinks, and will putting the word out to as many people as I can about this corporate bullying.

Please help this fish keeping forum fight off the Big Bad Wolf and its pack of corporate lawyers......pass this along to as many people as you can.....it is more than just fighting for a fish keeping forum...it is fighting corporate greed.

Oh...and drink Red Bull Energy drinks instead of Monster.....Red Bull has all those really cool airplanes.....and I know you all like airplanes. Boycott all of the drinks made by Monster.....hit them were it counts.....their wallets.

Are they going after 'Monster' cables too? Maybe they should sue Scotland while they are at it for their 'Loch Ness Monster'!

Bloody muppets! :isadizzy::pop4:

the tv and movie..or maybe just the movie or book people should now join the bandwagon and go after monster engery since they did not invent nor concieve the word,,ok theymay have copy wrote it...but they didnot orginate it there fore it cant be theres..bet if you took it to the suprimeme court they woul lose in the long run

In most lawsuits like this, they are betting that you won't have the resources to fight it and just fold.

It seems so petty...you would think they would be more interested in keeping up their competition against Red Bull and other drink manufacturers rather than focus on a tiny thing like the letter "M"!

I recall reading an article years ago about some guy out west who owned a bar and restaurant called Jeep's. The guy's nickname was Jeep since he was a tot in the early 1930's when his mom nicknamed him Jeep after the little white dog in the early Popeye cartoons. One day he got a letter from American Motors who demanded that he change the name of his place because he was infringing on the copyrighted "Jeep" name. AMC took him to court where he produced annotated family album photos and affidavits from family members and childhood friends to confirm that he was nicknamed Jeep long before AMC's predecessor Willys had produced their first Jeep for the Army. He won the case and AMC had to back off and leave him alone. Always nice to see somebody sock it to a big corporation.

This is just the usual behaviour I have come to expect from a bunch of smart-ass corporate lawyers and managers who have no common sense or decency!:tgun2:

I signed the change.org petition, left a snippy comment, and Linked to it on my Facebook page.

Note however that it's really Continental Enterprises who're the silly twats who instigated the entire embroglio on behalf of Hansen (Monster). :blind:

This wont last 5 minutes if it ever gets to a court room... there is no case to be answered unless of course the drinks firm can prove their copyright and use of the word "Monster" predates the Oxford and Collins dictionaries.

Ridiculous...you would think that these people would have something better to do with their time than try to intimidate a group of fish enthusiasts over something so petty. Petition signed.

What a silly situation.... Money grubbing is ruling this century.... Look at Disney trademarking the words 'seal team six' after they wacked old Osama... Totally retarded.

(Personally I'm more a Relentless or Redbull fan myself, especially with redbull doing so much sport promoting (Something needed with the tubby youth of today.)

I guess it's only a matter of time before "Monster Truck Weekend" bites the dust...:pop4:

We can't call Monsters Monsters anymore... they must hence forth be referred to as 'somewhat worrisome and mildly unsavory entities which bare no similarity to a certain energy beverage'
