During WW2,there was a USA tank was powered by an aircraft radial engine......question is what engine?...What Tank???.......

The Merlin engine was also adapted for tank use, in which role it was caled the Meteor; compared with previous engines it's power was phenomenal & it made some of the British tanks later in the war, the Churchill & the Comet, very fast, formidable tanks - the Comet also had a variant of the 17 pounder anti-tank gun, which meant it was one of the few tanks to present a real challenge to German armour. The Meteor was also used in the Centurion tank, probably one of the most successful & widely used tank designs in the world - the Israeli army still had some in service into the 1990's.

the Israeli army still had some in service into the 1990's.

the Tracks from the Centurions are still fitted to the Merkava Tank and the Merkava IFV's so parts of it are still going :icon_lol: the key parts on any tracked vehicle :jump:

The Wright R-975 Whirlwind was a series of nine-cylinder air-cooled radial aircraft engines built by the Wright Aeronautical division of Curtiss-Wright. These engines had a displacement of about 975 in³ (16.0 L) and power ratings of 300-450 hp (225-335 kW). They were the largest members of the Wright Whirlwind engine family to be produced commercially, and they were also the most numerous.
During World War II, Continental Motors built the R-975 under license as a powerplant for Allied tanks and other armored vehicles. Tens of thousands of engines were built for this purpose, dwarfing the R-975's usage in aircraft. After the war, Continental continued to produce its own versions of the R-975 into the 1950s; some of these produced as much as 550 hp (410 kW).
 
The M5 Stuart light scout tank was also powered by a radial aircraft engine, I thing the same one that powered the F4F Wildcat.
 
This tank had very light Armor,but had speed...a heavy machine gun could take it out...was instrumental in the battle of the Bulge.....because its air cooled,the crews froze in that spam can...Used up to the war in Bosnia!.....seen one restored on the Military Channel,labor of love by dedicated people!...when finished they fired it up..just like an old Stearmam,smoke,fire ,oil,Sound....they Found a living former tank commander..of WW2,it was his very tank,reborn!!.The man was astounded seeing it!.The now very old guy jumped in and away he went at a high rate of speed!In a Huge Rooster Tail of sand!....reliving those memories of his past!!...Great program!!...thanx Guys!.Vin!!
 
The best know would be one of the M4 Sherman series, powered by (IIRC) a Cyclone.
Shermans came with a few odd drive trains, the GM 'Multibank' consisting of 5 Cadillac V8 blocks connected to a single transmission being one very strange device.
One version of the M3 Stuart came in for the radial treatment as well, can't recall which one.
As for the Rolls Royce 'Meteor', indeed an adaptation of the 'Merlin' and power for the Centurion.
Couldn't think of a worse device for the Tropics, our 'Koalas' (never to be exported or shot at) were a pain in Viet Nam, as the thermal footprint was vast ......... even to the point of setting off fires in dry undergrowth.

I saw that show, he said the last time he saw it was when the parked it with others at the end of the war. Loved how his wife said that she had never seen him smile that big in years.:salute:
