An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 struck off the western coast of Indonesia's northern Sumatra island early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake, which happened at 12:37 a.m. local time, was centered in the Indian Ocean about 423 kilometers (262 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the USGS. It also was 951 kilometers (590 miles) west of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
