Tell me what, or who, this is!

Walter Oesau has probably been killed in this aircraft, shot down by P38's. But actually, nobody can tell if he was really onboard this 109 that day.
 
Well done Loic! It's Oberst Walter Oesau's Bf109g-6AS (you haven't got one of those yet). He was Kommodore of JG 1, and as Loic says, was killed on 11th May 1944 over St Vith by a gaggle of P-38s. The story is that he was actually ill in bed with flu, and only took to the air after a rousting telephone call from der Dicke Hermann himself, accusing him of all kinds of cowardice - Goering's constant, unjustified accusation towards the Jagdgeschwader of the time.

As to whether he was flying this particular aircraft... Green 13 was his lucky number, in any case.

Loic points out that we're not actually certain he was flying Green 13 that day - although the probability is that he was. The Kommodore's aircraft probably gets repaired first!

If I remember rightly, it was Oesau who decided to put a stop to chevrons and things for Gruppe and Geschwader staff and so forth, for the very clear reason that it made them easy to single out.
