teson1 on the Gringo Trail

Greggnngggrrr...

Ok. That was not nice. :banghead:

Still got a lot to learn flying the DC-3... Didn't check wind on the field and weathervaned into the only group of trees even remotely close to the runway...

Let's see it positively. Learning and practicing a lot of new things on these events. Did I say that's why I keep coming back for more?
If it just wouldn't be the hard way... :hatchet:

Light damage only; the local mechanic was able to fix rapidamente.

Down in La Toma

At least I got down in one piece.

1. Lined up with Chimborazo in the background, for the first attempt. That's when I was still smiling... Meanwhile the plane has a few more scratches and patches.

2. Quite a few clouds in the mountains again, but still quite manageable.

3. Spectacular Alausi canyon. The railroad climbs out of the gorge in a series of switchbacks along the almost vertical walls. Quite an impressive train ride.

4. I'm flying with Realengine. Actionned the flaps by accident in flight which blew the flaps and the hydraulic/electrical system. A pretty fast approach without flaps. Lucily the gear at least can be extended manually. Landing not nice, but got down in one piece.

Taking off from La Toma for Jaen

Robert, thanks. Didn't have a single boring flight so far.

Welcome to Peru .... the "Trail" is getting shorter ... :wiggle:
Great place to be, Austin ! DC-3's getting asthmatic with the high montains here, but what mountains they are !
Still a heck of a way to go. Considering the party going on at Salta I fear supply will have dried op by the time I get there (again!).
I better hurry up. :running:

Although ... I'm not loaded up to MTOW yet, so maybe I'll pick up a barrel or two en route.

Don't worry Gunter, Carmen and I are flying over to Jujuy to pick up a load of :icon29::guinness::icon29::guinness::icon29::guinness: this afternoon.

This party's just getting started....see you when you get here.

Hope we don't get a FUI or FWI citation! :icon_lol::icon_lol:

Now it was CAVOK at Cajabamba, and overcast at Huaraz.
Seems a front is goint through, and I'm flying along...
Sneaked through the valleys again.
Pity there were almost no veiws of the mountains. The Cordillera Blanca has some of the most amazing mountains of the world.

Sorry, Duenna didn't start. Had it set up for baton autopickup (no idea why it didn't autostart), but didn't check after stert whether it really was logging.
I've added screenshots of Load screen and flight analysis screens.
Hope that's ok.

Quite a flight. At Huaraz everything above 11000 ft was completely socked in.
To the south and east of the mountains weather was better though.
Took a big detour south to Laguna Conococha before crossing the mountains.
Still, the climb to the laguna through the clouds was pretty unnerving. There's a lot of granite around, and the DC-3 is not exactly climbing like a rocket at these altitudes.
Did something I've never done - used the small stream flowing out of the laguna through Huaraz for navigation. Actually I'm pretty thrilled about the Yahoo maps overlay for Google Earth - streams marked there are identic for FS9 default (at least where I've flown). (Regarding the roads, Yahoo maps has more roads than FS9 for Peru, but the subset displayed by fs9 is present in YM.)

5. Following the stream through the clouds.
6. Finally breaking free.
7. Not the last time I'd be in clouds. Laguna Conococha.
8. And clouds again diving down the valley to Huanuco.
I'm served, thank you.

I wonder how you guys with heavier machines got out of Huanuco.
First getting out of that hole called an airport, then climbing at METO, and still the ground rising at the same speed as the plane.
And as icing on the top a nice load of clouds in the valleys.
Not comfortable.

Nice clear skies on the altiplano, but everything below 10000 ft in clouds.
Dove down the Chillon valley for the fun of it. Feeling your way along a valley through the clouds is much more fun going downhill, when there's the option for climbing out straight ahead, than uphill, with no option than clench the teeth, if I got myself into that situation.
