IMHO the most innovative motor racing on four wheels would be at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Not as much today as before the FIA (under Bernie's influence) re-wrote the regulations but at least the ACO allows new concepts and different engine designs to compete.
And I remember T-Rex well BTW.
