Texture Question

Charter Member 2012
Hi everyone,

I have been playing around with my scendb\world\texture files recently - I always loved the pactex2 files, but also some aspects of the pacific blues package especially the deep water "blue water" colors - pactex is too green in the deep water IMHO - I am wondering if it is possible or advisable to mix the two sets to come up with a 'customized' set of textures? I know the answer is to experiement with it, but I suspect some of you guys have experience with this already. Any thoughts? Is this a non-starter? Any lessons learned or things to avoid?

I'm thinking, back up my current folder first, and then have at it.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Ghostrider

Thanks Langereis,

I like the textures you've got there - that's pretty much what I'm looking for. Did you do what I'm talking about and mix and match some different sets?

I'm a SCUBA diver, and have spent my share of time flying over, sailing over, and motoring over reefs in tropical waters. I really enjoy looking down in CFS2, or in external views, and seeing those deep blues, the coral heads, the surf, the reefs, and the turquoise shallows with sandy bottoms.

It's very "immersive" (pun intended)

Thanks,

Ghostrider

Ghostrider,

I'm doing exactly what you are describing in my PTO version of CFS2. I even use textures for the cities from yet another set of textures. So I have combined textures from three different sets to creat the world that I like best. I've never had a problem while doing this. The ablility to modify, adjust, and create makes CFS2 ROCK! Go for it.

Texture question

Ghostrider,

Yes I did so. (Pactex sets). They blends very nice all together when you chooses the right ones.

Thanks, fellas - it'll be fun to tweek! What are your opinions on clouds? I've tried a couple of different sets, but haven't spent as much time with that yet - is there one set that really jumps out as the best? I think the clouds/weather add so much too.

Thanks, Ghostrider

hellcat44 just uploaded some cloud textures which seem to work well on my machine. They are here at the OutHouse, just look under his name.

Thanks again guys for all the help - I will have some fun getting everything looking just right.

and Fibber, indeed I have. I live right up the road from Morehead City, and sail out of the Beaufort/Morehead Channel. My wife and I have dove the U-352, Papoose, Hutton, and Proteus. Das U-Boot is very cool - I took some good U/W video of it a couple of years ago.

If you read the dive industry "rag mags", when they rank the best place for this and that sort of diving, when they rank wreck dives, it's always #1-Truk, #2-Morehead City, NC. A big chunk of the Battle for the Atlantic took place right offshore here. We sail out to Cape Lookout to get away for a weekend - From Cape Lookout to Cape Hatteras up the coast was "Torpedo Junction" in '42. The shoals offshore ("Graveyard of the Atlantic" from way back, even before U-Boats) forced the merchant shipping into a "kill zone" for the U-Boats until we got smart with our ASW. Then, the hunters became the hunted.

Another interesting note: A couple of years ago, they found Blackbeard's ship Queen Anne's Revenge, off Beafort Inlet. She is in the process of being excavated/preserved. Very cool stuff.

Nc diving

Ghost;:ernae:
Have been diving down there, Discovery Divers/ Seaquest/Jerry, for about the last 13 years. In fact, Morehead is where we go out of. Have done all those ones you mentioned several times. Did a penetration on the 352 but even laying still for photos there was too much silt for me. I did not want to become part of the local marine life!
Told if you do a drift on the Shoals that there is some pretty interesting things down there.
We were in Morehead when they went public about Blackbeard and visited the museun at a later time. The supposed site we were told unofficially is a dummy site to keep the real location hidden for now.
Missed last season due to shoulder surgery and surgeon not too keen on me doing rough water diving.

Thanks, guys for the info on clouds - it looks like I have some testing to do!

Small world, Fibber - I live about 20 minutes from Discovery Dive! My wife and I are Friends of the Beaufort Maritime Museum too... We also dove with Olympus this summer - they did a great job, and the owner is the guy who actually found the U-352!

The new aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores has as the main tank, a full size mockup of the U-352's conning tower, and part of the hull, with a bunch of sand tigers and other pelagics - very cool and worth a visit!
