Thanks Manuele & Italian Wings...

For a detailed report on the 1937 race from the Putnam Aeronautical Review, look here: http://books.google.ca/books?id=9GD...page&q=istres damascus paris air race&f=false

Included are great descriptions of the aircraft and some details of the modifications. Note that the SM-79s were modified with extra fuel tanks, the standard wing tanks were enlarged and the aircraft was allowed to take off at a Gross Weight of some 14,000 Kg (overloaded).

Trying to mate the two may take more than matching the apparent numbers (as quoted):

Lagos Tanks Configuration
1 Center 305 Gal/1156 Liter
2 Right 305 Gal/1156 Liter
3 Left 305 Gal/1156 Liter
4 Right tip 108 Gal/409Liter
5 Left tip 108 Gal/409Liter
6 Auxiliary right 108 Gal/409Liter
7 Auxiliary left 108 Gal/409Liter
8 Auxiliary Center 184 Gal/696 Liter
Total 1531 Gal / 5800L.

but the cfg. file lemonadedrinker posted shows:
411 + 108 + 411 + 108 + 411 + 184 + 108 + 108 = 1849 USG or 6999.2 L

Now, 1531 Imp. Gal does come very close at 1839 US Gal so I'm first of all curious if Lago got the numbers stated in the manual muddled (Imp. vs US Gal). Interesting too that the Lago Manual lists the smaller tanks at 108 Gal as does the cfg. but there is a significant difference in the 3 larger tanks 411/305 but even that doesn't match as 305 Imp Gal = 366 USG (not 411). Was someone 'just trying to make things work'?

There is a significant difference in the weights in the two .cfg files as well:

MVG SM79
max_gross_weight = 23644
empty_weight = 15479
disp. load = 8165

Lago SM79
max_gross_weight= 26780.000
empty_weight= 14991.000
disp. load = 11789

Simply adding the Lago fuel numbers to the MVG .cfg will certainly lead to issues and probably wreak havoc with the wt/balance as well. Being overweight or out of CofG limits will certainly affect the flight characteristics. Someone with more knowledge of air files can go into the other parameters that might differ between the two .air files

you are right ;) I looked into Printed manual of Lagos SM79 again

and it show other values than they have in Aircraft.cfg
