The 20th Fighter Group is now available!

heck that's not an issue really. Use Morton's Mk_cfs2_util_v2 which you can download from SOH at

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=49&id=6207

This utility let's you see all of the aircraft in the campaign missions and the aircraft folders in your CFS2/AIRCRAFT folder and simply change the aircraft in the campaign to your aircraft with a simple click. Give it a try. You can change all the aircraft in a whole large campaign in about 10 minutes. :triumphant:

Thanks, Captain Kurt, I'll try it, as soon as I can find it. Your link seems to be a link to this thread.

P.S. - OK, I get it. The link was a direct download. Happened so fast I didn't see it.

Ettico,

Actually, I'm very careful to try and use multi-lod planes so that is not an issue. For example, the two heavies used are The B24 Guy's OH Liberator, and the FDG B-17 with AI bombs.

Ettico,

Actually, I'm very careful to try and use multi-lod planes so that is not an issue. For example, the two heavies used are The B24 Guy's OH Liberator, and the FDG B-17 with AI bombs.

Those are the heavies I use, except with different folder names and all loadouts except the AI bombs removed so DCG can't select a puny loadout. I also use the MZ 190's and PR 109's. I don't think the FDG P-47 would work well for me, if I recall correctly. I use the KM P-47, the FDG P-51B, and the AW P-51D.

You'd think any multi-lod aircraft would work, but for me that hasn't proved to be the case at all. There are a lot of multi-lod addons that work well alone, but in a formation they nearly bog down the computer. And this has been the case with every computer I've had. Some multi-lod addons work great, some not so great. I don't know why.

When I download an addon ac for testing, the first thing I do is create a formation of them and then look at the formation in long range spot view. More often than not, the addons flunk this test. I often get frames below 10 with only 8 ac in view. My idea of fun is a furball involving 32+ ac, so...

Sadly, I had to discard the great KM B-24, after it initially passed the frame test. I found that it bogged me down in actual missions.

Anyhow, Morton's Mk_cfs2_util_v2 can easily solve everything except loadout differences. I can just download the ac you use and swap out any that don't work for me.

Actually, my DCG campaign system for the ETO isn't bad. There are a couple of things you can do with hand-crafted missions that DCG+AIRBOSS doesn't do, such as great mission briefings, fuel management, non-straight front lines (which could be fixed by having AIRBOSS edit the 'real' front line into the mission file), and warping without fouling up other squadrons' missions. And there is the limitation of not being able to alter a DCG mission in MB without throwing the mission.dyn file out of sync. But other than those shortcomings, DCG keeps track of every air crew and ac in the campaign, tracks infrastructure and ship damage, and makes it easy to swap out ac and loadouts, switch sides, and move to a different airfield. The mission I flew just before this conversation started had me escorting B-24's. After seeing them safely over the channel after their bomb run, I turned back and headed for Asch, where I used up most of my ammo strafing. On the way back I had a chance to bounce a squad of 190's at lower altitude, but I was outnumbered and low on ammo, so I passed. Then I used a CFO weather cheat to warp the rest of the way back to Framlingham. In the previous mission I was able to bring down one of Akemi's ultra-tough 190's after a long struggle. I flamed it a couple of times before it finally gave up the ghost. I haven't lost any of my squadron in a few missions, and they're getting better, which usually triggers a big CFS2 push to destroy them and their little squadron leader too. I expect dangerous times ahead. I may switch off takeoffs so CFS2 can't use that for an excuse to crash my best AI on takeoff.

Ettico,

Aye, but see...that's where the FDG B-17 had a problem, along with the OH B24 Liberator. Dbolt bombs, oddly enough, are framerate killers, not the bombers themselves. Plus, the AI would only drop one. The beauty of the AI bombs is they drop the whole stack, plus they are FPS friendly. You end up getting the benefit of maximum destruction for minimal FPS cost.

I use the same aircraft in terms of the German planes. The only difference is I use the KM B-24 as the player aircraft only (for the Juggler and Ploesti raids) and hand-edit the mission so the others use the OH B-24 Liberator.

Rami,

Right. The heavies I use with DCG use the AI bombs exclusively. I edited out all the other loadouts so DCG has no choice but to use them.

My DCG campaigns are set on airfield suppression mode, so hammering the mission infrastructure tends to supress enemy activity. Which is a good thing. Because there are a lot of them. Dropping one bomb at a time won't do.

Looking for a few P-38 enthusiasts...

Hello again,

Up next?

"title_string"=20th Fighter Group - Final P-38 long-range escort
"summary_string"=Listen up, pilots! Rumors are flying that our P-38s could be replaced soon with Mustangs, and we will gladly turn over these "ice wagons" to sit behind a nice, toasty Merlin. In the interim, we have work to do. The 8th Air Force today is sending out over a thousand bombers into Germany to raid aircraft production plants, refineries, and a ball-bearing plant in Saxony, near Leipzig. We are tasked with escorting the raid on Halle. Get these bombers in, and get them home intact!
"objective_string"=On July 7th 1944, the 20th Fighter Group flew its last long-range escort sortie in the P-38 Lightning, supporting the 8th Air Force assault on the Siebel aircraft manufacturing factory at Halle, Germany. During this raid, the 20th Fighter Group provided cover along the penetration route, over the target, and back across Germany until they were relieved near Meppel, Holland. The German fighters which attacked the formation went for the First Combat Wing, which these Lightnings were escorting. The lead bomber formation lost twenty-three heavies, while the other two Combat Wings successfully hit their targets without suffering heavy loss. 8th AF escorts downed eighty-one German fighters, while damaging another twenty-three. For the Luftwaffe this was known as the "Merseburg Massacre."
"intelligence_string"=After taking off, you'll meet up with the bombers near the English coastline & proceed directly into Germany after reaching Holland. Recently, escort runs into Western Germany have seen only minimal opposition, but we suspect that a target closer to Leipzig and Berlin will be different. Your primary responsibility is to protect these heavies, so only attack if Luftwaffe fighters threaten the bombers directly. Watch out for thick flak, and be ready for both Focke-Wulfs & Messerschmitts, including Zerstörers. Good luck!

Another CTD trigger...

Hey guys,

Did you know too much information in the mission description triggers a CTD? I found this out this morning when I tried to add a warning about taking off on this mission with an asymmetrical payload. :banghead:

Yup!

Its in CC's handbook. There is a limit hand editing. I forget the character count. I haven't hit it myself, yet...

Did you know it can also happen in the aircraft cfg file if you put to much information in the title?

The 20th Fighter Group has its home...

Good morning,

Courtesy of Captain Kurt...we now have Kings Cliffe, located near Peterborough, UK. Hats off to the Captain! :medals: :very_drunk:

P.S. - Achim: No disrespect meant, I just figured with this airfield and Salzwedel, I'd give you a rest. After all, you have a couple of books to keep you busy. :wiggle:

WOW! It looks like an FS9 scenery if not FS10!

Great job Captain Kurt! :applause: :applause:

Rami don't worry for Achim, I am sure he can use some rest after all the sceneries he had to work on and, after all, the more the merrier (... and more GSL sceneries if I may add :friendly_wink:)

Cheers!
KH
:ernaehrung004:

Achim and I have a very good relationship. He is very gracious and has been very happy for any contribution to European airfields I can make. Honestly I think he may sometimes be a bit overwhelmed that he is carrying the load for new airfields mostly alone. I still owe him a Luftwaffe campaign which I am starting to gather information for. Once the 82nd FG campaign in the Mediterranean is completed I will get started on that.

Kurt,

I know...I was kind of poking a little bit of fun. Speaking of a Luftwaffe campaign, did he happen to share with you that I sent him two books over Christmas as a thank you? (Even though they got there a little late...)

The wealth of information in those volumes could be used to make NUMEROUS campaigns...from the Low Countries and France to Britain, the 1941 Channel Front, North Africa, the OstFront, and the Defense of the Reich.

Rami,

Man I know what you mean about numerous campaigns. The issue is not a lack of information but that there is an overwhelming amount of information. Trying to winnow down to a manageable story line for a campaign is daunting. For example many units fought in 4 or 5 theaters, unit designations /names were changed, units were split to form new units, and just the sheer volume of combat is hard to work through.

For example, you probably saw in the the 2 JG26 books that even though the unit was fairly stationary by Luftwaffe standards, they fought on the Channel front, the Med, and on the East front, had 35 + different air bases and scored 2683 kills through 1944 (I don't have 1945 data). How can I do justice to that? That's could easily be 15 to 20 serial campaigns.

Right now I am contemplating something a bit more confined, along the lines of a late forming unit like JG11 (1943) - or a Sturmstaffel like IV/JG3. Maybe even JG7 with the 262. I'm sure it will come to me in the end.

CK,

That's why they invented the highlight reel, my friend. I thought about doing that a couple years back for Hans-Joachim Marseille when I was working on the Western Desert package.

If you can figure out how to make the AI execute a Lufbery Circle, please let me know...lol

To keep them in a turning fight is hard. The AI like to scatter. Some will break off from the main group. Once in a while you'll get a long drawn out circling knife fight. Which is what the laffberry circle was/is.

The Japanese used this to some extent against the wildcats. Mostly to draw them into a tight circling fight that the Zero would always win. So it may already be hard coded in the game. I think using different skill and aggression levels might get results. Maybe novice with average aggression. Seeing how this is a basic ACM tactic.

I probably should have posted this in the AI performance thread.
