The Dragon Cometh...

WarHorse47

SOH-CM-2024
I took a gamble recently and got the Bear Studios Chengdu J-10 Vigorous Dragon. I must say its quite challenging.

I wasn't sure how it would run on my old machine. There are a few FPS hits over complex scenery or with nasty weather, but overall it flies just dandy.

Anybody else flying this bird? If so, do you have any suggestions or tweaks to share? I'm still trying to figure out all the avionics.

Thanks

Nice looking model, alot like the Convair F/A-201 Kestrel, (which never left the drawing board), the Saab JAS-39C Gripen and JAS-37 Viggen. There might be something to that design that US Aircraft Manufacturers are missing out on.

Not my personal cup o' tea but certainly a nice looking model.
There are certainly some similarities to the Taifun or Euro Fighter, but I think that is likely more because to arrive at a certain performance you work with the same physics. I first thought that someone had stuck a pair of canards on a F-16.

Yes, it has a beautiful model and textures. What I'm finding fascinating is what is under the skin. Bear Studios has an interesting design approach.

First, you have your basic models as shown in the picks. You can jettison any weapons or fuel tanks OR you can make a change in the aircraft.cfg to hide a specific loadout.

Second, they have created varous routines that manage the cockpit views. There is no 2D panel, and in fact it skips over the 2D all together. Also, the routine interprets the selected model - so although you share (alias) the same panel folder, it will provide the backseat cockpit for only the 2-seater.

Third, the avionics seems very realistic. This is where I'm still trying to learn how all the avionics works. I can setup an ILS and do a cold start, but I'm still trying to figure out how to fire the guns and other weapons and set the A/P. Although it comes with a detailed manual, there seems to be some missing information due to translation from Chinese to English. There is a lack of detail on what steps (switches to activate) to activate certain systems.

I like complicated a/c, but this is a real challenge - and enjoyable - to me, that is.

More of a enlarged Lavi without relaxed static stability- note the distance between the wing and foreplane. The kids from IAI were in the design phase right up to the eye balls untill the foot came down on technology transfer. A very capable machine. Fortunatly PLAAF doctrine keeps its potential from being exploited, the PLAAF is very much a poor third cousin in the Chinese military hierarchy, and combined arms operational art alien to PLA planners. They have been keenly observing western operations since '91, Desert storm was a big suprise to the PLA general staff, but still no indication of modern operational thinking observed in PLA exercises-yet. Give 'em another 18-20 years. The warlords don't like to move quickly.

Can we get back on topic, please??

I'm more interest in talking to others at SOH who have this product, and to enhance my flying experience in FS9. Specifically, to quote from my first post:

Better yet I'd even go for a link to another site that has some additonal information or repaints.

Thanks
