I've been following this FPS/video card discussion with much interest, since I just had a new PC custom-built for me, largely to play OFF3
.
I was an old RB3D player a decade ago (now I'm just old
), flew with the LafEsc in the big Wars back then but had been away from flight sims for a long time, then I heard about OFF a month ago. Got an OFF2 DVD (thanks, Sitting Duck!), tried it, liked it, but my old PC wouldn't drive it well, so I decided to get a new rig.
A local IT guy built it for me, it arrived the same day as my OFF3 CD :woot:. But it seems that it, too has FPS issues. My new system specs are:
Windows XP, SP3 w/ 4GB RAM
Intel Core2Duo E8500 Wolfdale @ 3.16GHz each
ATI Radeon HD 4830 w/ 1GB
Seagate 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
Now given that I'm an OFF Newbie, what sort of FPS should I expect? Right now I've got my settings at 5-5-4-4-5-3; I am running TrackIR (just got it yesterday!); I've set my overrides as per DoubleStop's recommendations. I've turned AA off on CFS3Config and set AA to 8 in my ATI Catalyst Control Center, which ATI says is really an AA sample rate of 12 since I've set it to "Edge-Detect"
. AF similarly set in CCC to 6.
I've been flying exclusively QCs, 1 plane versus 1 plane, as I re-learn how to fly these lovely crates (my RB skills were never very good anyway
). My frame rates have been running from a high in the high 30s to lows in the upper teens, with occasional peaks & troughs outside these ranges.
So I'm curious to hear if others think these FPS rates are too low or about right, given my systems configuration. I'm willing to experiment by tinkering with settings (there are SO MANY of them
) if anyone has any suggestions...
