The Good, Bad and Ugly p-47 mission set

Sorting out the best way to do this mission..

P-47s flew more than 546,000 combat sorties between March 1943 and August 1945, destroying 11,874 enemy aircraft, some 9,000 locomotives, and about 6,000 armored vehicles and tanks. Only 0.7 per cent of the fighters of this type dispatched against the enemy were lost in combat. As a testament to the survivability of the P-47, it should be noted that the top ten aces who flew the P-47, returned home safely. Before the war was over, a total of 15,579 Thunderbolts were built, about two-thirds of which reached operational squadrons overseas.

Under the tenacious and inspiring leadership of Colonel Hubert “Hub” Zemke, the U.S. Eighth Air Force’s 56th Fighter Group (also known as “Zemke’s Wolfpack”) emerged as one of the most successful American fighter units during World War II.

Equipped with new P-47Cs, they joined the 4th Fighter Group on a couple of 'rodeos'–fighter sweeps intended to lure the Luftwaffe into combat, but Zemke had to abort because of an oxygen system malfunction. And on the group's first 'ramrod'–a bomber escort mission for which the P-47, with its blunt, high-drag nose and resultant short range, had never been designed–his own radio went out. (Because of faulty ignition systems, early model P-47s suffered from inordinate radio static.) His men bounced some bogeys over Walcheren Island and knocked one down–realizing too late the fighters were British. In all fairness, the RAF had strayed from its assigned area, and in the heat of combat even experienced pilots sometimes failed at aircraft recognition.
But such things happened, so to do a mission like this is out of the normal, not that I do missions out of the normal..
Off to shoot down some Brits, Bummer.. I guess this is the Ugly part..

Thanks for this information Hobbit! I never knew the Brits and the Yanks shot each other down in the fog of war.

Yes it does happen it seems..
Bummer..
Would have hated to have this happen :banghead:

Shooting at the Brits in 1776 would be okay.

But not on 1943, Heck we were there to save them then..
Thank God..
Glad we saved the Brits during WW2, because of this we now have Dr. Who..Monty Python..Red Dwarf..
And I really like These..

Yes, and because of Monty Python, I cannot now listen to any news broadcast even from the BBC without waiting for the punchline. Silly, I know, but there 'tis.

By the way, a goodly number of Brits viewed our salvation mission somewhat differently...but we did manage not to start another war with them:mixedsmi:

I have decided to leave this mission out of the 56th FG Mission Package..
Shooting Down Brits, is NOT GOOD..

I Like the Brits, after all they gave us Dr. Who and Monty Python, and Kate Beckinsale..
Not to forget Red Dwarf, and Mr Bean..
And as much as I poke the Brits with my pointed hobbit stick, I do like the British,(don't tell them I said that)
Have to, they are family.. Yea from England on my Dad's side..
Granted it was 300+ years ago came over in 1689 as far as I have learned.

Shooting down these guys with P-47's just is Not Good..
A historical fact it happened, but best left to History..
So to Honor the British and the loss of British fighters to the hands of Rookie 56th FG pilots
I will not include this mission..
Bummer it happened, no point in doing it again..

HH,

Do the mission and make the Brit flight a must survive. Set up a flight of P47s to attack a must destroy German flight. Then during the engagement have the Brits show up as a must survive flight. Give the player the idea of the FOG of war. With the German flight and the Brit flight being Goals (one destroy and one survive) both flights will show up as purple in the tactical display. It would be up to the player to determine the difference.

Just a thought.

Or one view from a Brit.

Do the mission as it actually happened.

It is history, it is done.

And I will probably get moderated for this, but Guy Gibsons dog was called Nigger!

NOT DIGGER.

Lets not interfear with history.

WOW I am surprised, I wasn't thinking of including it..
This after I built it did trouble me, funny isn't it that it did cause me some trouble..
I will reconsider all of this..

For it to be Historical the mission will only be the Brits and the 56th P-47's involved..
And crazy as it sounds and as much as I do poke the Brits with my little Hobbit stick..
I am not pleased to shoot them down in a P-47..

And from what I have read, no one was very happy that day in the 56th either..
as the say some folks got "Hammered" over this..
No charges were filed, I know some pilots had to take several hours of heated butt chewing..
And a new round of aircraft recognition classes..

Go for Historical Accuracy: all the work you put in is good record. The truth is sad but true nevertheless; it does show what can go wrong.
Even if one doesn't like it the mission is accurate; and as said above, it can be left up to the player in the end.

The 'must survive' is a good point: even simpler don't even do that; you don't have to press the 'fire button' if you don't want to. It is a PC after all; not too many projectiles in the cockpit.

We can have a beer when all is said and done; but p'raps spare a thought for those who couldn't. Encouragement to you.
