The Legend of the Y-29 Mustangs and Operation Bodenplatte

SOH-CM-2023
One of my favorite episodes from the HC "Dogfights" franchise is the "Death of the Luftwaffe", highlighting the fallacy of Operation Bodenplatte and the stout defense put up by the outnumbered Bodney Blue-nosers of the 487th Fighter Squadron when Goering's boys came knocking at their airfield (Y-29) in Asch, Belgium.

Back in 2002 The FDG Team started a mini project as a tribute to the 487th. They did 5 skins for the the virtual FDG P51D - the hottest P51D model we had at the time - but i don't know if they ever built an actual mission to complete the project. Even though it would be quite dated by today's standards, has anyone seen that mission by chance?

Bearcat,

I took this on several years back...it's included in the 486th Fighter Squadron redux that 486_Col_Wolf originally did. I even used the actual pilot names with 352nd FG skins from Morton. I can take a break from the BoF project and make the campaign into an auto-installer if you want it bad enough...

"title_string"=486th Fighter Squadron - Legend of Y-29 is born
"summary_string"=There's no evidence to support it, but Cpt. Meyer feels they Germans may be planning a surprise to begin the new year. Before we escort bombers to Berlin, we'll fly a short patrol over Asch, looking for any sign of Luftwaffe activity. Keep your eyes open!
"objective_string"=On January 1st, 1945, German forces launched a major offensive in the Ardennes, the same forests where they punched into France almost five years earlier. The legend of Y-29 was born on that day when P-51s of the 487th, along with P-47s flying cover, turned the tables on a formation of German Fw-190s and Bf-109s which were about to attack Asch aerodrome, known as Y-29. P-47s forming up to search for armor threw off the enemy's timing, and the P-51s, led by John Meyer, were able to take off & join the fray, and over a thirty-minute dogfight, twenty-two enemy fighters were brought down with only three Mustangs damaged.
"intelligence_string"=If your takeoff is uneventful, relieve the P-47s and fly a short patrol around Y-29. keeping an eye out for anything that looks suspicious. Luftwaffe fighters or bombers could come from virtually any direction or height, so DO NOT get fixated in one direction! If you do encounter German formations, rip into them and take down as many as you can!
