Soon to be released is the new ETO light_gun which can be placed on night fighters to illuminate enemy aircraft in complete and total darkness. The light gun will illuminate your target as long as you hold the gun trigger down. It can be placed on an aircraft in conjunction with other live weapons to destroy the target and can be activated like a gun camera along with the guns or separately with your cannon switch.

It also will illuminate ships and ground targets. This one is the real deal guys.

Well this was my humble request to model the Leigh Light and aircraft search lights of the early war. Should be fun!

The gun can be used as either fixed or trainable. It uses "light bullets" and you have to hit the target you are aiming at to illuminate it just like you would aim a searchlight on it. It will illuminate any facility, ship or aircraft. It will not illuminate terrain or open water. The target stays illuminated as long as you hold the gun trigger down.

the light bullet is a group effect that combines reflected light and a halo/aura when it strikes the target. Ted just got his copy to test.

The test package has been updated a little and I have asked Mid to upload it here on SOH so you guys can play around with it and see what applications you can come up with for it.

It will be great on a sub hunter aircraft or nightfighter. You can change the color of the light effect and play with the textures for different effect.

Have fun with it and lets see if we can get it mounted on the right aircraft and have some fun. Ted is working with it already and one of the things you may want to eliminate is the bright muzzle flash however it looks like a very bright light and would not be bothersome if relocated underneath the aircraft or on a wing where it should be.

Have Fun with it guys, and you do not need any permissions to play with it modify it or change it.

O1 heres an attempt to mount it as an aircraft light.it does light up the other plane,but you wind up with einstiens philadelphia experiment green glow. lol. :costumes: ok i'll get serious with them.

The first line of the new effects causes this eto_light_gun_light. I put it in to create a spot effect. You can eliminate it entirely and it looks clear and bright.:mixedsmi: Or you can reduce the size of it.

It looks better on ships and facilites but not aircraft. I had a 2nd one just for aircraft without that effect line in it. I would make a 2nd one just for use against aircraft with only the reflected light effect in the bullet.

Here are some shots with only the reflected light effect in the bullet. Notice the range of the light as I approach and light up Cherbourg. I have sent the latest updated pack to Mathias and Middle for upload on Netwings and SOH.

Gun Boat

I did test this on the German E-Boat. I put a searchlight and gun on it and it does attack other ships and will put the light on attacking aircraft as well. Will post some shots of it also.

Well, this makes me think about 8.8s with working(!) searchlights to help the Nachtjäger to find their target.

The search lights we have target planes and fire at them. That is how they are illuminated. Just wait for the Himmelbett and accurate radar/searchlight facilities. :d

O1 i'm still testing it and have made it into an ac light,speed triggered.removeing the muzzel blast did eliminate the spacecraft green haze :costumes: but the host plane remained lit up.i moved the emmiter location to 175 feet in front of the plane and its no longer lit.so we my have the option of not giveing up a gun.
 
Question

Just curious, why wouldn't you want the host plane lit up as it fires the light? I would think that was a major drawback of this approach that not only did it allow you to see but made you very visible. A speed activated search light? I am not sure that is accurate or desired. The plane would have to be at the correct speed to have the light shine and that seems impractical to me. Adding another gun to a new model is easy and the planes we already have did not use this tactic. Or am I not understanding something?:banghead:
 
Once Mid gets the pack up and everyone will get a chance to play with it here are a few things that may help and some thought starters.

1. The muzzleblast has been removed by adding a new effect "fx_no_muzzle_flash" to the gun on the aircraft XDP. If you want a searchlight effect when the gun fires simply add any effect that you build to that part of the script in the XDP. For example you can easily substitue one of the light effects that will go on and off when you activate and release the trigger.
2. The range can easily be adjusted thru muzzle velocity and time alive in the weapon XML.
3. The effect when the bullet hits the target can be modified in a million ways. Reflecetd light will flicker and is cancelled out by multiple additions of reflected light effect. That is why you see a flicker and the light goes very stable right after you release the trigger. You can use this to advantage by either increasing or decreasing the primary effect lifetime to get the best light on target effect. You can also add back in the other effect lind to create the spot light effect and smooth out the flicker.
4. The spotlight effect uses a jet exhaust texture which is a yellow green, it can be changed to any color including UV or red if you desire.
5. The gun can be made trainable and placed in a turrett and will auto lock on to an enemy aircraft for you. It can also be placed on a ground vehicle/searchlight or on a ship.

The reason I wanted to get this very rough Alpha model out to you guys is to prove that the concept works well and can be improved on rapidly and has many applications that can be used.
