Quite correct Moses and yes it is Akermann (without C). I read some place that the guy was born somewhere in Latvia and his Birth name was Janis Akermanis (or something similar) which became later americanized as John D. Akermann...

Not from Eurasia. The company still exists nowadays. This particular aircraft started life as a two-seat version of an aircraft that has been built four times. The picture shows it in its final configuration after two major modifications.

Impressive BG, and without any hints!

The only other photo I have is WWI French Ace Albert Deullin standing by the slightly modified version that he lost his life in during a May 29, 1923 test flight.
