I think it was posted here before the last major crash, even with the Latvian swastika markings still on it in an attempt to confuse us..
 
It is on the Congo and is an effort from Mr. Levy. Silly to think Lefty would not know this one. :icon29: I also have it as a Levy-Le Pen Type R.
 
'Tis the same machine, I think - different designations for the military (French, Finnish, Portuguese) and civilian applications.

I don't think the Finns were in the Congo, but the Belgian airline S.N.E.T.A. operated a service from Kinshasa-Stanleyville.

It appears to be a S.P.A.D. or Bleriot/S.P.A.D. but I can't pin down the exact model. It looks like it may have been used in racing. A beautiful airplane.
 
Right on the aircraft, wrong on the pilot Mike; this blue SPAD 15/5 'Baby' was flown by René Fonck, the French 'Ace of Aces' and photographed during his visit to the ELTA in 1919.

The other one built was indeed owned by Nungesser.

I think they were in identical livery - anyway, the :icon29: morally goes to John who set me on the right track with SPAD - I was wasting a lot of time looking for Yankee birds.....

Not sure if they were identical, I do know Fonck's plane was mostly dark blue. Of course I editted out the 'RF' logo on the tail!
 
Here's Nungesser's - aprt from the insignia, and the pale headrest fairing, they look pretty much a pair - without, of course, the benefit of colour photography !
