The P-38 engine selection: Merlin vs Allison

The RR seem to be a longer engine as well. No idea how well it would handle the CG changes.

True and Lockheed and Kelly Johnson were moving on to the upcoming jet age with the P-80.
In the video he gives many reasons why it wasn't going to happen.
 
A couple of things I can think of:

- The P-38 already had issues with compressibility (transonic mach) in a powered dive. More power would have caused more problems.
- Packard was producing the US Merlins, mostly for the P-51 productions lines. They would need to triple their production to also outfit the P-38.

Plus, Packard was also producing Merlins for DeHavilland Canada (DHC) to be used in the Mosquito.
