Hey All,

At least this is how it was for me! In a 3/4 ton 64 GMC with a 300 cu in straight 6 and a 4 speed.

The verse about growin up on the bus is especially dead on!

What a great song!

When I was kid back in rural Arkansas, one of my uncles had a car. The rest of the family had pickups. We'd ride to town, the adults in the cab and the kids piled into the bed. If it was cold or raining, we'd all get up behind the cab of the truck.

Ed, I've owned 3 1965 Chevy pickups over the years. That bodystyle GM truck is my favorite all time vehicle. The first vehicle I ever drove on my own was my grandpa's 1966 Chevy pickup. I'm playing with the idea of finding a 64-66 GM truck just to putt around town in.

My dad used to plow the snow off the school yard during the winter with an old odd looking pickup truck. I wish I knew what it was now, but I can’t remember. It had a flat nose, like a VW bus. We would love to sit in the bed of that truck as he pushed snow around. The really fun part was when he hit the snow bank hard and fast, in an attempt to push the snow higher and make as much room as possible in the school yard. When he came to an abrupt stop, all us kids would go sliding up the bed, into the front of it, rolling atop each other. I’ll always remember seeing him look back at us through the rear window, laughing so hard… Today child protective services would have him arrested for that, I’m sure! It was great fun!

I have had a few 65 Chevy pickups with the old straight 6 through the years and it is still may favorite truck to work on.

Need to change the plugs, no problem. You had room under the hood for yourself, work light, all your tools, and an ice chest full of beer. :icon_lol:

Almost forgot. Anyone ever have the linkage for the transmission hang? One of mine did it at times and I would have to hop out and give it a love tap or two with a hammer to un-stick it.

Well I got tired of all the funny looks people driving new cars and trucks would give me so I decided to have a little fun with them. I mounted a couple of small bins under the hood and put some old engine parts in them. When I would pull up to a light and the shifter would stick and somebody was giving me the "better then you" look, I would hop out with my hammer, give the linkage the needed tap or two, then start pounding on the bins. I would then start throwing an old carb and other parts over the cab into the bed of the truck. Needless to say by this time the people would be looking at me like I had gone crazy.

Then jump in the truck, fire it up and drive off. I am sure it gave them something to talk about.

Yep, I did that ... always sat in the absolute back of the bus ...

Good selection Ed

Had a 77 chevy like the one in the film except mine had doors. :jump:

Rick, my column shift linkage on my first 65 would hang up. After I learned how to adjust it, I never had that problem again on any of my column shift trucks.

My first one was a V-8 but the last two were straight sixes and those are the ones I miss most. It didn't bother me a bit to take off halfway across the country in them. Those old trucks just kept going.

Man oh man, forgot clean about the Corsair P/U Snuffy, I had a HS pal had opne of those and the rear engine dropped out while we were cruisin' on Riverside Dr. LOL

Maybe God has a way of making us forget our least pleasurable moments.

Love the song Ed, always have. But then what do you expect from a redneck who was weaned on C & W.

My first rig was my Dad's 69 Chevy pickup. 250 straight 6 and the old 'Three on the tree" column shifter.

Always had the cab full and the bed too hauling my buddies around in High School.
