I think they are a second hand purchase from the U.S. Nai.

Still, what a great a/c and sight to see. I think our lot will rue the day they bought the new JSF as opposed to more Hornets.

From what I can make out, these Super Hornets are a fill-in measure in aussie defence hardware to replace the obsolete F1-11's and add to the existing Fa/18 aircraft already in RAAF service. I think the longer term plan is to purchase the F-22 Raptor as a longer term replacement. Not sure that I personally agree with all that, but it is what it is I guess.
