I thought I had this all figured out ,but when I tried to rename a config file for the Air Tractor so I would know what it was and put it in a folder for use on a CD ,I used Air Tractor Aircraft .config and it wouldn't let me change it. If I needed it again I planned to change it back to just Aircraft config.
I thought as long as you put the type of file at the end, like txt or config it would work. What am I doing wrong?

The file type is *.cfg. So the file in FS would be aircraft.cfg. If you rename it to 'airtractor_aircraft.cfg' what happens?

Another thought - what OS are you using and where have you installed FS?

Best,

Myles

The usual warning

I get the usual warning that "If you change a file name extension the file may become unusuable, are you sure you want to change it?" I thought from last time that as long as I kept the file extension at the end , like .config that you could change the name.
Whats strange is I finaly changed the name to Air Tractor Aircraft.config but don't have a clue how or why it finally worked. I had tried to change it for a half hour and was giving up when it changed,so I was doing something wrong and did something right but don't know what.
Thing is I wasn't trying to change the file extension , I kept it at the end of the file name, like you guys said to do last time.

forgot myles

I forgot to tell you I'am running Windows XP Home, and my documents as well as FS9 is on the C drive , the default drive.

I don't know what your settings are set to, but this might help:

1. Highlight the file
2. Go to the top tool bar and click on Tools
3. Select "Folder Options" from the drop down menu
4. Select the "View" tab
5. Uncheck the "Hide known extensions" box
7. Highlight your file
8. edit in the new extension
9. Click OK to the warning window
10. I then recheck the "Hide known extension" box

already unchecked

The "hide known extensions for file types" is alreay unchecked and always has been.(thats what it's called in my computer.)

Figured it out

I figured out what I was doing wrong and it was stareing me right in my flu bloodshot eyes.Instead of typing in cfg, I was useing config ,which is why it kept saying I was trying to change the extenstion.I was, from cfg to config.
Blame it on this flu I've had for over a week.

Hurricane the key is

If the name is {something}.extension

You must put that same .extension on the end of the new name or windows will bitch at you that the file will become unusable. (actually its not but that is another in-depth topic)

The next time you rename a file watch what you are doing. Before you do anything take a pad and paper and write down the name of the file you are going to change.

The whole name including the extension (which is not actually part of the name)

When you change the name and it tells you that it can not change it look at the name you just changed it to and the name you originally wrote down.

I will bet a lot of donuts that you forgot to put the extension on the end of the file name.

I understand that

Problem was the only way I can run FS9 without loseing textures is by using msconfig. Been doing that since when CFS3 came out and thats what they said to do, in other words use a clean boot. I was so used to typing in config (msconfig?) that thats what I typed in, config instead of cfg.

I don't understand .............. I re-name files all the time from Aircraft.cfg to Aircraft.bak and I have no problems. When I want to name it back to the original I do it, and I have no problems. When I want to disable a bgl I re-name it to xxxx.bak. If I want to use it again I re-name it back to a xxxx.bgl.
No big thang ............!
