This is not a Wildcat! It's French, for a start...

It's a Grumman G-36 C1 of the French Aeronavale. These aircraft were ordered before the fall of France, and by the Armistice, one was even ready for delivery. The entire order, of course, was taken over by the Royal Navy, and became Martlets MkI. Another story.

But if France had held out a bit longer...

Indeed France commended 81 embarked fighters but the armistice prevents their delivery and the British take back the contract (Martlet I)

va44, NICE FIND! I had one in B&W of this (single) aircraft, but you couldn't see that the elevators were also flagged.

Like most US aircraft delivered to France, they would presumably have been repainted before acceptance into service, and certainly the elevators would have been repainted. The scheme I've stuck on mine corresponds to what many FN aircraft were wearing that year...!

Dewoitine, that's the story behind the skin I uploaded for an RN MkI.

I think the Greeks were supposed to receive some of these as well, but were in the same situation as the French and the planes went to become Martlet I's instead.

Spot on, there too. They were delivered to the Med, and taken on strength by the Fleet Air Arm there. They were MkIII aircraft, without folding wings, actually. Delivered in USN non-specular light grey with black BuNo numbers - but what other markings..? They were issued to No.805 NAS in Egypt, but remained land based. They subsequently received British s/ns in the AX--- series. Some had their uppersurfaces repainted a sandy colour, probably Midstone. From the end of April 1941.

I want ONE..
But I want everything..
Another Good old american plane supplied to our Poor allies..
Hey I can't help it..LOL..

The Wildcat was a Good plane, not up to the Zero standards in a turning match, But what plane was in '41
For a carrier aircraft she did her job..
Granted the F6f was the monster, But the wildcat did keep the japanese busy while WE came up with a aircraft to out match the Zero..
and I want this skin when it is freed up..
It Looks GREAT..
BRAVO On another wonderful Skin..
You keep this up Nigel and we all will have quite a stable of French (american) aircraft to play with

Thank You very Much.
These are great skins from you..As always..

The French planes were equipped with French FN guns instead of US Brownings right?

When the planes arrived in the Med for the Greeks were they decked out in Greek markings or without any markings?

Lots of things there!

Vincent - good find! I wasn't sure about the striped elevators, but it looks as though that is correct. Close study of the black and white photo there seems to show a dark stripe along the trailing edge of the elevators, so OK, they would have been delivered that way. They would not have stayed that way, though - GM167Fs were delivered natural metal with a red stripe... For example. I need to check when the Aeronavale suppressed the tailplane markings, though.

Westview - the French planes were not delivered armed. The armaments were supposed to be fitted on reception in France.
I have no photos of the Greek aircraft - other than AFTER the application of Royal Navy markings, so if they ever did have Greek markings, they disappeared under the British ones. Aircraft delivered to the French did already have French markings, even if the paintscheme was not the one they would use operationally. As above, see the French GM167s - which were delivered in a beautiful, colourful scheme, with French markings! So... very possibly they did have Greek markings when they arrived in Egypt. Difficult to say.

The Grumman G-36 should be equipped with six machine guns Darne (caliber 7.5 mm).
2 were installed on the engine cover, 4 in the wings.

For Greek planes, I have no information.

Regards

And without access to the GMAX source file, we can't fit the cowling guns... Can't have it all!
