• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

So they fire the coach because the faculty is embarrassed because their team won in a blow-out. How does that reflect "...a Christlike and honorable approach to competition"? Sounds more like extreme political correctness. :frown:
 
The proper ending to the story should be the fired coach gets hired by the academy he beat, makes them a kick-butt team, they defeat the team that skunked them... and the coach gets fired again for turning the academy girls into un-Christian competitors.

That coach was simply suckered into a lose-lose situation. They were already up nearly 59-0 at half. What was he supposed to do? The academy should have forfeited to save both teams further trouble.

If you're playing football against your 10 year old son do you tackle him by grabbing him and gently lowering him to the ground or do you clothesline him for having the temerity for stepping onto the field with your vast magnificence? Nobody is suggesting that the winners try not to win, what they're suggesting is that after it's 50-0 it's honorable to rein things in a little. Fall back into a zone, walk the ball up, work the clock, the same types of things that are done AT EVERY LEVEL of sports. You don't rub it in. Hell, even in the NFL, possibly the most competitive league on earth, it's considered good manners to take out starters and work the clock when up big late in the 4th. Do you believe a QB is less of a man or is discrediting the spirit of the game if he takes a knee with 30 seconds left on the clock rather than heaving up a bomb in the hopes of turning 49-0 into 56-0? We're talking about a school with 20 girls TOTAL, all with some sort of learning disability. What's the honor of grinding them into the dust? Would being on the winning side of a game like that be enjoyable to you? It darn well wouldn't be for me. You can win without winning like an ***hole.

You have GOT to be kidding me...:faint:After reading and assessing everyone's input, I still agree with what OBIO posted initially, sorry bout' that.
The way I see it, it was the un-stoppable strength and determination that America, (note... America as a whole) had that got us through the Second World War. Folks from all walks of life came together as soldiers, pilots, aircraft makers, etc to achieve the goal of nothing less than victory. There was no such thing as "feel good" or "E for effort" back then.. You either did the job, or you didn't.

If nothing else, it's just a game, but games are trial runs of real life situations... that's it. Just a practise session where the loosing side goes back and looks at their mistakes, and where they went wrong. Hopefully the next time they play, the lessons will be learned.

I mean to be very direct and blunt here, I hold nothing against anyone initially but 'political correctness' and 'feel good' are major contributors to the mess that this country is in today.

I would like to be blunt as well:

At the risk of putting my foot in it - girl basketball is NOT WWII.
The opposing team here is NOT the Third Reich!

From what I read of the loosing team, they showed grit by fighting back to the last second, so the American determintion in the face of opposition still LIVES!

You are right about the mess politicians of both schools made of this after the match through arsing about, but the people on the court should not stoop as low.
 
I don't want to get into the particular ethics of running up the score against a handicapped team, but I remember a football game in High School where our coach had us back off in a game we were winning 37-0. At the end of the season, we were tied in our division and the tie breaker went to most points scored. We lost our chance of advancing by 2 points. We could have easily won that game 100-0 if we had kept pushing.......

We seem to be all too good at making mountains out of molehills. This is my last post on this matter as it is reaching the point of absurdity.
