Thrift Store Treasure Chest

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
After my wife's out patient therapy sessions today, we stopped into the local Salvation Army Thrift Store....and they had stacks and stacks of models. Mostly aircraft, a few pieces of armor (tanks), a few subs, a couple battle ships.

I picked up three of them: AT-6 Texan, F2A3 Brewster and some training jet my wife liked...the one used by the Red Arrows flight demonstration team....in US terminology it is the T-45 Hawk.

Usually, I can walk into that store with a hundred dollars to spare and they have nothing of interest. Today I go in with 20 to spare and they had at least 2 dozen models that I would have liked to purchase...P-51D, Lancaster, Spitfire, P-40, Ju-88, 190 and 109...all in 1/48th scale. Prices ranged from $2.99 to 14.99 each.

oh man....

What a nice find! Every now and then, I'll find something here at Savers. Fun place..

I wonder what submarines they were?

I swear, Id have to make my favorites... Especially the Canoe class, Type II with tall conning tower and no gun nest.

I like to check Goodwill and the SA for joysticks. I've found some deals there on those.

As for subs, although I've worked on fast attack boats and boomers for the Navy, I like the WWII ones looks better.

I agree with you on the WW2 subs being my preferred pick in subs. The models at the Salvation Army were the newer subs...which to me look like anorexic bowling pins. I like the shape of the German U-Boats much better.

And speaking of joysticks....the owner of the pizza shop that my wife and I order from and I have talked about flight simming a good bit. He used to be into simming until CFS3 and FSX kind of took the wind out of his sails....so, he has a joystick and throttle package that he no longer uses and will be bringing to me as soon as he remembers where they are stored. Not sure of the brand exactly, but he called them HOTAS...doing a quick search for HOTAS joystick brings up the Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar. Could I be so lucky?

The Germans made some cool subs..

The Type VIIC was another good one, single gun nest in the rear of the Conning tower, not the double decker. (dash B series?)

Another set were the German Type XXI and XXII boats, both Walther 'Hydrogen propulsion' boats, (I think). Pretty unique. Designed to stay under the entire mission, which could be up to 30 days. Equiped with Schnorkel, hydrogen (which produces pure water as exhaust byproduct).

But the German Canoe was clean...

Would be neat to fit a Canoe with state of the art batteries and engines. Could you imagine having one restored, taking it to Hawaii?! lol... Man, that would be a blast.. Outfit the interior nicely though. If money was no object, make that baby a yacht inside..... :d
