Yeah, Johnny M. was a bad movie. Sad, cuz a lot of good designers worked on it (including Syd Mead of Bladerunner).

And back to THX. I'm curious to which version you guys are referring to. When i was up at the Ranch, George re-shot a lot of the scenes....in fact, many of my friends are in the new "re-release" as extras....but you had to shave your hair to do it....so i skipped it! :) But yeah, great movie, way ahead of its time. The re-release is actually pretty cool....the CG integration is very seamless...

I love Blade Runner.... especially the police flying motorcycle.... That is just so cool.... I wonder if we can have a flying car or motorcycle in the next 10 years !! :running:

THX 1138 (1971) was the film that I watched.... I don't know which one is the re-release version...

Pretty Interesting...Will there be a sequel to this movie? would be nice if there is one.... :ernae:
 
Well, around 2002-2003, Lucasfilm "re-mastered" a lot of their older movies, including the original Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and of course THX 1138. They went in and replaced matte-paintings, added in better effects, and in some cases, inserted in new characters to tie up the stories (the young Anakin Skywalker was added into the last shot of Return of the Jedi).

Some of these new things looked weird, but it worked really well for THX. The CG stuff was cleanly integreated and not in your face. The story and everything else remained the same.

THX-1138 was ripe for the Lucas re-edits. It was filmed on an exceptionally tight budget and a lot of the effects were pretty basic. I think the nature of its sets would have allowed for a lot more seamless integration of some elements of CG -- although I'm certainly no filmmaker and would have to defer to someone who is.

And to MaddogK, I would agree with you that "Starship Troopers" is entertaining....it's just not the book, and the book is far better. With the right treatment the film could have been a classic rather than a "B" movie. That being said, I suspect it was made to be a "B" movie.

That sounds awful snobbish, doesn't it?

"Blade Runner" is also one of my all time favorites -- it was not made to be a "B" Movie.

That was a good book! I think I still have it. When I heard that they made it into a movie, I was pretty happy and could hardly wait to see them drop from a ship into atmosphere with their jump suits, going into battle. But when the movie came out, it was 'nothing' like the book. Totally different. Also, I think they went out of their way to do pure gore. People constantly getting cut up and ripped apart ALL the time.. I was ready to just leave. Some people can handle that, but man.. That was just too much.. lol..

I would truly like to see the entire "Foundation" series on the big screen, at least the original trilogy.

While the "Rama" series are an excellent read, I suspect it would be too slow and boring for as a movie.
 
Thanks Bill. I was trying to remember the name of that book series about Rama.

Great series.. I can still picture that immense structure in my mind, as well as that odd ship they were in to catch up to it.


Another one I would like to see is RingWorld.
